Eleanor Lucille Simpson - age 88 of Fenton, passed away peacefully August 20, 2025. She was born August 11, 1937 to Theodore Wenzel and Anna Krajenka Wenzel in Detroit. Eleanor married her teenage sweetheart, John Simpson in 1956, and was just shy of their 58th wedding anniversary before he passed in 2014. They moved their family from Detroit to Fenton in 1968. Eleanor leaves her four loving children, John (Lynda) Simpson of Mason, MI, David (Romana) Simpson of Ventura, CA, Colleen Plets of Shelby Township, MI, and Bridget Durant of Fenton, MI; her loving grandchildren, Lindsay (Brian) Waldman, Brennan Simpson, Chelsey Zazo, Anthony Zazo, and Ian Simpson; and three great grandchildren, Layla Waldman, Jamison Waldman, and Westin Waldman. In addition to her parents, she was predeceased by her sisters, Dolores Leonetti and Elaine Carlson; brothers, Paul and Richard Wenzel; grandson, Collin Simpson; and great granddaughter, Marley Waldman.
Eleanor graduated from Cooley High School in 1955 in Detroit. In addition to being a loving, hard-working mother and wife and raising four children, she decided to attend and pursue her nursing degree, which she received from Mott Community College in 1976. She was employed by and worked for St. Joseph Hospital in Flint until her retirement in 1994. Eleanor was an avid golfer (hole in one club!), bowler, enjoyed playing cards, spending family time and time with longtime friends. She was a devout Catholic and spent her life doing God's will. She was a member of St. John Catholic Church in Fenton most of her life and was also a Eucharistic Minister. Eleanor was a volunteer at the hospital after she retired and also a volunteer with funeral luncheons at St. John's. She was fondly remembered as being a favorite Girl Scout leader and Brownie leader. She lived a long, full and meaningful life, and her legacy will live on in her children and grandchildren with memories that will last a lifetime.
Her visitation will be held at Sharp Funeral Homes, Fenton Chapel, 1000 Silver Lake Rd., Fenton, MI 48430 on Friday, August 29th from 2-4 PM and 6-8 PM, with shared memories at 6:30 PM, and a Nightingale Tribute by the Nurses Honor Guard of Genesee County and Rosary at 7 PM. Funeral Mass will be held at St. John the Evangelist Catholic Church, 600 N. Adelaide St., Fenton, MI 48430 on Saturday, August 30th at 10:30 AM. Burial will follow in St. John Cemetery and funeral luncheon at the Community Hall of St. John's Church.
Those who wish to remember Eleanor in a special way may make gifts in her memory to the Alzheimer's Association of America or St. John Catholic Church Outreach Program.
