Elijah Fuller Moore, Jr., known to friends and family as "Fuller", died peacefully at home on November 1, 2023 after a more than decade-long fight with Parkinson's disease. Born on December 14, 1940 in Laurinburg, NC, he was the first child of the late E. Fuller and Anne Batts Moore. Fuller spent most of his formative years in Richmond and Virginia Beach, VA and graduated from Virginia Tech University with a bachelor's and master's degree in architecture. Following an initial stint at the University of Oregon, Fuller spent most of his career at Miami University in Oxford, OH, where he rose to the rank of Professor of Architecture prior to retiring in 1999 after 25 years. Early in his career at Miami, he designed and built two of the homes he lived in; one was featured in House Beautiful magazine and the other won a federal design award. Fuller was a nationally recognized expert in solar heating and natural day lighting, writing some of the early landmark texts in the field and completing a Fulbright Scholarship at Moscow Architectural Institute and also was a guest scientist at Los Alamos National Laboratory.
After retiring, he and his wife, Jane moved to Clearwater Beach, FL and subsequently to Edgewater, MD. A common denominator of both locations was the open water, allowing him to rekindle his passion for sailing. Fuller was an intelligent, resourceful soul who approached life with wit, zest, and a mindset that there were projects to be done and deadlines to meet. His favorite projects involved building sailboats - the largest was a 23' cat ketch in his home garage out of mahogany and teak. This masterpiece, aptly named "Woodwind", was a beauty, and Fuller was never happier than he was when he took her out on the water. Outside of his work and sailing, Fuller loved golf, billiards, traveling, old movies and TV series, as well as spending time with his family and friends.
He is survived by his wife of 31 years, Jane Moore; his sons, Justin (Stephanie) Moore of Ithaca, NY and Michael (Leslie) Moore of Zionsville, IN; his grandchildren, Laurel, Fennel and Landry; his sister, Alice (Fritz) Forry of Portsmouth, RI and his children's mother, Kay Moore of Oxford, OH.
In lieu of flowers, the family has expressed their wish that gestures of sympathy be made to the Johns Hopkins University, c/o Fund for Johns Hopkins Medicine, 550 North Broadway, Suite 724A, Baltimore, MD, 21205.
