Elisha Pennington, a cherished member of his community and a devoted family man, passed away peacefully on November 23, 2025, in Hazard, Kentucky, at the age of 84. Born on September 7, 1941, he dedicated a significant part of his life to the Blue Diamond Coal Company, where he worked as a coal miner for 32 years. This career not only provided for his family but also exemplified his strong work ethic and commitment to supporting his loved ones.
Elisha found immense joy in spending time with his family, creating memories that would last a lifetime. He was a proud member of the Full Gospel Church of Jesus Christ at Smilax, Kentucky, where he found comfort and fellowship. His contributions were not limited to the church; he was also a respected member of the Hyden Masonic Lodge #664, where he built lasting relationships and served his community with dedication.
In addition to his work and community involvement, Elisha had a passion for the great outdoors. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, gardening, and yard work, embracing the beauty of nature and sharing these activities with his loving and devoted wife, Gladys, his children. grandchildren & other family and friends.
He leaves behind a loving son, Donald Wayne Pennington of Bulan, Kentucky, and two devoted daughters, Rachel Miller and her husband Jimmy Ray of Bulan, Kentucky, and Patricia Ann Whitaker of Hazard, Kentucky. His grandchildren: Jimmy Elisha Dewayne Miller (Morgan), Amanda Kay Miller, Billy Pennington, Donovon Johnson (Rachel). His great grandchildren: Chase Isaiah Stidham, Serenity Sky Faith Ann Whitaker Kelly, Preston Tyree, Calium Hoskins, Nathan Miller, Ella Miller, Piper Miller. He is also survived by his brothers, Albert Pennington and Finley Pennington, both of Wooton, Kentucky, and four sisters, Elizabeth Joseph of Wooton, Kentucky, Alice Turner of Yeaddiss, Kentucky, Reece Pennington of Wooton, Kentucky, and Mallie Pennington and her husband Owen of Smilax, Kentucky.
Elisha joins in eternal rest with his beloved wife, Gladys Pennington, his daughter, Angie Carol Pennington, and his parents, Elhannon and Flora Boggs Pennington. He is preceded in death by his brothers Willie Bill, Ben, Ray, and Columbus, along with his sisters Stella Johnson, Loretta Lewis, Marie Howard, Ann Caldwell, and Hettie Langdon. His granddaughter, Tonya Michel Whitaker, and daughter-in-law, Tina Jo, also predecease him.
As we remember Elisha Pennington, we celebrate his life, his unwavering spirit, and the love he shared with those around him. He will be deeply missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Funeral service for Mr. Elisha Pennington will be held at 2:00 p.m. -Wednesday, November 26, 2025 at the Dwayne Walker Funeral Home at Hyden, KY with Larry Lewis officiating. Burial will follow in the Curt Napier's Cemetery located at Lotts Creek, KY. Visitation will begin at 4:00 p.m. Tuesday- November 25, 2025 at the funeral home chapel. Masonic Services will be observed by the Leslie County Masonic Lodge #664 at 7:00 p.m. - Tuesday- November 25, 2025.
