Elizabeth "Betsy" Alcorn Cornett 84 of Hazard, Kentucky passed away surrounded by loved ones at home on March 8, 2026, after an unexpected illness.

Betsy was born on August 25, 1941 to Dorothy and M.H. Alcorn, Jr. in Hazard, Ky. After graduating from Hazard High School in 1959, she went on to attend Centre College and graduate from University of Kentucky where she obtained a degree in education. She was a member of the Centre College choir and inducted into the National Honor Society. Betsy was also a member of the Lexington Singers.

While in college, she met Tyler Cornett of Knott County, Ky. They married on September 5, 1964 in Hazard, Ky at the First Presbyterian Church, where she was a lifelong member. She was employed after graduation as a first-grade teacher and taught for more than 30 years in the Hazard City Schools system. Betsy and Tyler had three children, Allison, and twins, Catherine and Andrew.

Betsy was a force of nature. She was a beautiful woman with a beautiful, albeit firm voice. She loved her family and was blessed to have her devoted children and grandchildren close to her. She wanted to help educate people and genuinely cared about her student's wellbeing. She had a way about her that inspired such love and devotion from those around her.

Betsy was preceded in death by her mother, Dorothy Tice Alcorn and father, M.H. Alcorn, Jr., her husband, Tyler Cornett, her son-in-law Lynn Mullins, and her brother-in-law, David Peercy. She is survived by her sister, Katy Peercy. Her children, Allison Mullins, Andrew Cornett (Linda), and Catherine Cornett. Her grandchildren, Colby Hoskins (Alexa), Megan Martin (Anthony), Landry Mullins, Ty Cornett, Jason Johnson, and Andrew Cornett and great-grandchildren, Preston, Kasen, Blake, Cooper, Theodore and Coraline. Additionally, a host of nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews, cousins, and her beloved dog, Pippa.

Funeral Services for Elizabeth "Betsy Alcorn Cornett will be conducted on Friday – March 13, 2026 at 1:00 P.M. at the Engle-Bowling Funeral Home with Rev. Dr. Beth Garrod-Logsdon officiating. The Interment will follow in the Cornett Hill Cemetery located at Sassafras, Kentucky. The Visitation will be at the Engle-Bowling Funeral Home on Friday from 12:00 – 1:00 P.M.

In Lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Hazard First Presbyterian Church at 160 Broadway – Hazard, Kentucky 41701.
