Elizabeth (Liz) Forbes Felton exhaled quietly on Tuesday, June 25, 2024, leaving this life behind. We, her family, know that she has been reunited with her loved ones who went before and that this gave her peace as she transitioned to her new life with God the Father.
During her 88 years, our mother truly loved life and everyone in it. She possessed a beautiful spirit that was shared with everyone she encountered through her words and actions. She drew people in with her beautiful smile and the crinkle of her vibrant blue eyes. Always inquisitive, she wanted to know you, to learn your story.
She loved a good practical joke, but she was also ready to sit quietly and listen when someone needed it. To her, life was about making memories, whether with her beloved family or a stranger.
Those lucky enough to call her family or friend were blessed with her generous nature. Food was one way to share this and boy could she cook! She fed everyone; neighbors, shut-ins, friends, strangers, and especially family. She was known for her chocolate pies which were always in demand because she would never share the recipe, although eventually she did share with a select few who were then sworn to secrecy. Mama's food was always served with a huge dose of love, and we truly believe this is what made it so good.
She was the only child of James Walter and Annie Taylor Forbes and grew up in Crisp, NC. She was married for 64 years to her high school sweetheart, Jonathan Kerr Felton, who predeceased her. Mama often marveled at the size of the large and chaotic family she and Daddy created. Settling in Macclesfield our Daddy built their dream home where they raised us, her four children: Debbie Felton Lynn (Mike) Tarboro; Kathy Felton (Lee Moore) Virginia Beach, VA; Jon Felton, Jr. (Marcia) of
Raleigh, NC; and Al Felton (Sharon) of
Raleigh, NC.
They were blessed by 8 granddaughters for whom she expressed an abounding love like no other. Jamie Lynn Anderson (Brandon) Tarboro; Jill Felton Chatham (Dave)
Boca Grande, Florida; Ashley Felton Dobbs (Mark)
Raleigh, NC; Allie Felton Perry (Allen Turnage), Spring Hope, NC; Kelsey Leigh Diradour, Chester, VA; Samantha Taylor Felton (Connor Jones),
Raleigh, NC; Annie Kathryn Diradour, Virginia Beach, VA; Summer Felton Palomares (Mark),
Raleigh, NC.
More blessings were received with the arrival of the Great Grands; Charlotte, Will, David, Kylie, Jackson, Kerr, Colton, Maddie, Benji, Autumn, Michael, and Aaron. She sang with them often what became their special song, A Bushel and a Peck, and then demonstrated the lyrics perfectly to each one, through her love. Our Mama often said these children truly made her cup overflow.
As an only child, she was constantly amazed by the gift of her family and the sheer numbers when all were gathered together. We were noisy and often out of control, but she somehow managed to find a special moment with each one of us.
A dedicated member of Macclesfield First Christian Church for over 60 years, she served as a Sunday School teacher, CYF youth leader, Deaconess, and sang in the choir.
To fill the void of an empty house and because of her love for children, she became the In School Suspension (ISS) teacher at South Edgecombe Middle School. During her years there she always tried to be a positive influence by giving of herself in and outside of school.
Her passions included decorating, going to the beach, and especially shopping with her best friend Brinkley. Holidays (especially Christmas) spent at home were truly epic with Mama taking charge in the way that only she could. No matter how tired, she was always ready to dance, laugh, read a story, or play outside with each generation of children that came along.
Following the death of her beloved husband, Mama remained in our family home until she was diagnosed with Alzheimer's Disease. She moved to The Fountains of the Albemarle, now The Jane of Tarboro, in 2020, living in Independent Living, Assisted Living, and finally Inspiritas (Memory Care) until her death. We were fortunate that she was surrounded by wonderful caregivers at each stage of her disease progression.
Alzheimer's did not defeat her. She continued to spread her special kind of love to all she encountered, whether she was meeting them the first time or being re-introduced for the tenth time. Always a lover of children, she adopted baby dolls and stuffed animals to give care and comfort to.
Our Mother, Elizabeth Felton, was an amazing, special woman who truly did not understand the impact that she had on people. We are all better people and blessed beyond measure to have been able to call her Mama.
A special thank you goes out to all of the staff at the Jane and Gentiva Hospice of Tarboro for their wonderful care, comfort and compassion not only to our Mama but to our family as well. None of us could have made it through this journey without their presence.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Sunday, June 30, 2024, at the First Christian Church of Macclesfield with the Reverend Melissa Acres officiating. Visitation with the family will begin at 1:30 PM in the church Fellowship Hall. The service begins at 3:00 PM in the Sanctuary.
