Elizabeth Settle Harvey was born in McCormick, South Carolina on June 7, 1926. The eldest child of Thomas and Ola Mae (Waller) Settle's 17 children. Elizabeth Harvey was affectionately known to most of us as "Liz" or "Harvey". The family moved and settled down in Swainsboro, Georgia after moving around a lot in the earlier years. Liz moved to Ashville, North Carolina and worked at K & W Cafeteria. In 1943, she moved to Cleveland, Ohio, to stay with an aunt and worked at Woolworth and met and married David Harvey. During their travels to visit family that lived in Hartford Connecticut, they ended up in a very bad storm, so they stopped in Newark, New Jersey and decided to make Newark their home.
Liz was a hard worker. Besides working for a restaurant, a retail store, she also worked for a pharmaceutical company (Bristol Meyers) and a company that manufactures steel measurement tapes and rulers (Evans Rule) for over 25 years.....and was the first African American to work for a company that manufactures custom precision metal stamping, molding and assembly solutions (Weiss-Aug) for over 20 years. She also worked for a company that made toothpaste which had an impact on her so much that she vowed to never use toothpaste again. She used baking soda and salt mixtures to brush her teeth.
At church, she met L.G. Davis and had a son Lee G. Davis Jr. whom she loved and raised as a great man. She was a hard worker; loved the Lord with all her heart. She tried to live a life of giving and serving others. She was always helping family and friends whenever and however she could. She truly tried to live her life by the word of God.
While in her early 80's she moved to Los Angeles, California to be cared for and near her loving son. Here, she found a new church to call home in Carson, California. Even at her new church the pastor got to know her as a new member. She always tried to help people and give of herself, even if she didn't know you. Through her love for cooking and baking she was able to meet and impact the lives of many people. To the point she was known as the "Cheesecake Lady".
She leaves behind 5 sisters, Melrose Allen (James), Evangelist Georgia Settle, Leola Settle, Gladys Hickman, and Betty Campbell, and one brother Minister James Settle (Lillie), son Lee and grandson, Jason and 4 great grandchildren, Isaiah, J.D, Jayla and Nate as countless nieces, nephews, and her godchild, Kenny Moody.
