Elizabeth Ann Matthews

Elizabeth "Beth" Matthews, of Paradise Valley, Arizona, passed away peacefully on September 23, 2025, from complications following a fall. Born in Detroit, Michigan in 1938, Beth grew up in Saginaw before moving to Tucson in 1958. While working as a bank teller and living with her aunt, she met the love of her life Robert "Bob" Matthews at a banker's association event. They married soon after and raised two sons, Chuck and John. In 1968, the family moved to Phoenix, where Beth and Bob became deeply involved in community life. Beth is survived by her husband of 63 years, Bob; her sister, Patty Doyle; her brother, John Martell; sons Chuck (Sally) and John (Stefanie); grandchildren Katie Basel (Jim), Kristi Bootz (Justin), Chuck Matthews, Annie Matthews, and Maggie Matthews; and great-grandchildren Emma, William and Ben Basel, Brooke Bootz, and Myla Drye. Beth remained an active member of the Arizona Columbine Garden Club and served on the Women's Board of Barrow Neurological Foundation, the Phoenix Heart Ball, the Junior League of Phoenix, and was a lifetime member of P.A.N.D.A. In addition to her philanthropy, Beth was also an avid golfer and an enthusiastic bridge player. A private funeral service will be held for family only, with a Celebration of Life to follow in October. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Hospice of the Valley or Barrow Neurological Foundation.
