Obituary published on Legacy.com by Vander Plaat Memorial Home on Mar. 18, 2026.
Elke Karen Brown (née Bartels)
July 6, 1937 - March 16, 2026

Elke Karen Brown, beloved wife, mother, sister, and grandmother, a resident of Paramus, NJ, since 1964, passed away on March 16, 2026. She was 88 years old.

Born on July 6, 1937, in Dresden, Germany, Elke's journey to the United States began at the age of 19, when she boarded the MS Berlin in 1958, arrived in New York City, and took up residence in Orange, NJ. Her move to the U.S. marked the start of a long and full life in her adopted home, where she became a homemaker and a bookkeeper at Farview Drugs in Paramus, NJ.

Elke is survived by her devoted husband, William Brown, of 43 years; together, they built a life of love and many cherished memories. Elke is also survived by her children: daughter Madelon Spero Hayo and her husband, David, of Fair Lawn, NJ; and son Vincent Spero and his wife, Jeanette, of Ringwood, NJ. She was the proud grandmother of Emma Spero McComber, and her husband Jacob, and Tomas Spero.

She is also survived by her brothers, Eilert Bartels and his wife Barbara, of Bonita Springs, FL, and Immo Bartels and his wife Adela of Miami, FL, as well as her best friend of some 80 years, Maike Marschhausen of Long Island, NY. Her memory will be cherished by her extended family: Jean Rohal and her husband, Jeffrey, of Jeannette, PA; Joanne Brown Wiren and her husband, Kenneth, of Orford, NH; Kevin Brown and his wife, Rachel Heller, of Mebane, NC; and Steven Brown of Ligonier, PA; as well as many nieces and nephews.

Elke was predeceased by her brother, Gorch Bartels of Switzerland, her parents, Dr. Heinrich and Gisela Bartels of Nurnberg, Germany, and her former husband and dear friend, Vincent Spero of Paramus.

Elke's resilience, from her early years living in Germany to the life she built in Paramus, NJ, remains an inspiration to all who knew her. She will be missed by all who loved her.

The family will not be hosting any services at this time. In lieu of flowers, the family requests donations be made in the name of Elke K. Brown to the American Heart Association.
