Ellen Ruth Apple (Wolinsky)
January 13, 1933 – January 24, 2024
Ellen Ruth Apple (Wolinsky), known to everyone as "Moo," passed away on January 24, 2024, at the age of 91. Born in Steubenville, Ohio, Ellen was always at the heart of the fun, whether as a member of the cheerleading squad (where she was known as "Pee Wee" because of her small stature) or trying to sneak into her father's bar, the Antler Café. An excellent student, she attended The Ohio State University, where she was president of her sorority, and soon after graduation, met her late husband, Jack Apple. Ellen and Jack lived in Pittsburgh, PA for decades, where they raised three children and cheered their beloved Steelers on to six Super Bowls. Ellen worked as a public school teacher in Pittsburgh and later at educational organizations in Baltimore, MD, where she and Jack moved in 1990. Ellen moved to Stoneham, MA in 2018 and later to Malden. Ellen was spirited and joyful; she loved to travel, dance, dress up for Halloween, and laugh with family and friends. She was adored by all who met her.
Ellen was the daughter of Mose and Esther Wolinsky and is survived by her sister, Joan Levy, of Pittsburgh, PA. Ellen was married to her beloved husband Jack for 58 years, until his death in 2015. She will be dearly missed by her three children, their spouses, and her six grandchildren: Douglas and Pamela Apple of Brooklyn, and their daughters Emily, Sophie, and Lily Apple; Betsy Apple and Matt Brogan, also of Brooklyn, and their son Caleb Apple; and Linda Apple and Tom Champoux of Melrose, and their daughter and son, Abby and Eli Champoux. She will also be missed by her brother-in-law Don Apple and his wife Pat of Tampa, FL, and many nieces and nephews. She is also survived by three beloved grand-dogs: Oliver, Cleo, and Cooper.
In lieu of flowers, donations in her memory may be made to the Northeast Animal Shelter of Salem or the Food Drive in Melrose.
