A funeral service for Ellen Mains of Algona, will be held Thursday, October 23, 2025, at 11:00 AM at Grace Church in Algona. Military honors will be conducted at the church by the American Legion Hagg-Turner Post #90 and the V.F.W. Howard D. Omdahl Post #2541. Her family will greet friends one hour prior to the service at the church on Thursday. Private family graveside services will be held a later date at East Lawn Cemetery, Algona.
Ellen Louise Mains was born April 8, 1949, in Mason City, daughter of Ellis P. and Evelyn (Crapser) Mains. Ellen grew up in Algona graduating from Algona High School in 1968. She then served in the United States Army being stationed in California as a typing clerk.
In earlier years when raising her son John, she operated a home day care. She then worked as a waitress and in the school hot lunch program. She worked at Good Samaritan Society doing housekeeping for 12 years and also worked at Exceptional Opportunities as a direct care aide prior to her retirement in 2013. Ellen enjoyed button collecting, reading, going out to dinner and most of all visiting with her family especially her grandkids. Attending her church, Grace Church, was very important to her.
Ellen L. Mains died Thursday, October 16, 2025, at the age of 76.
She is survived by her son, John Mains of Algona; her daughter-in-law, Laura Mains of Ankeny; three grandchildren, Brandon Calby, Karley Marshall, and Max Mains; her four brothers, Charles (Deb) Mains of Urbandale, Dennis (Paula) Mains of Algona, Randy Mains of Superior, and Jimmy Mains of Algona; a sister-in-law, DeeDee Mains; and many nieces and nephews and other relatives.
She was preceded in death by her parents; and two brothers, Marc Mains and Terry Mains.
