Ellen Marie McCarthy

Ellen Marie McCarthy, a beloved mother, grandmother and friend, passed away peacefully on November 22, 2025, at her residence in Matawan, NJ surrounded by her family. Born on December 5, 1933 to Catherine and Aloysius Hunt, in Staten Island, NY, Ellen's warm spirit and tender heart touched numerous lives throughout her 91 years.
Ellen was born and raised on Staten Island, where her life was woven into the fabric of the community. It was there that she met her beloved husband, the late Charles J. McCarthy, with whom she shared decades of cherished memories until his passing in 2000. Ellen's legacy as a dedicated mother and grandmother continues through her children and grandchildren; she is remembered with love by her son Charles J. McCarthy and his wife Adriana, her daughter Ellen Vaccaro and her husband Anthony, her son Kevin McCarthy and his wife Roseann, and her adored grandchildren, Christopher and Ryan McCarthy and Nicole and Claire Vaccaro.
Ellen's professional life was characterized by meticulous dedication and friendly interaction. Her career as a secretary saw her working in New York City until her marriage in 1962, after which she continued to contribute her skills as the secretary to the principal at Monsignor Farrell High School on Staten Island from 1980 until her well-earned retirement in 1996.
Ellen moved to Brick, NJ where she resided from 1998 until 2021, before moving to Matawan, NJ. A woman of faith, she was an active parishioner first at Our Lady Queen of Peace on Staten Island and later at St. Dominic Roman Catholic Church in Brick. With a voracious love for reading and a playful spirit that shone through in her Mah Jong games with friends, Ellen found joy in the simple pleasures of life. Above all, her greatest joy was found in the echoing laughter and shared stories with her family, for whom her love was boundless.
Ellen Marie McCarthy's spirit and memory will continue to inspire her family and all who knew her. Her strength, warmth, companionship, and unfaltering support established a legacy that will endure, as will the lessons of love and kindness she imparted. Ellen's presence will be profoundly missed, yet fondly remembered, as her life is celebrated and her peace is assured.
Visitation will be held on Tuesday, November 25, 2025 from 3:30pm to 7:30pm at Waitt Funeral Home, 501 HWY 79, Morganville, NJ 07751.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held on Wednesday, November 16, 2025 at 10:00am at St Clement Roman Catholic Church, 172 Freneau Avenue, Matawan, NJ 07747
