Leona "Onie" Fleek, age 89, of S. Main Street,
Keyser, WV, peacefully passed away on Thursday, October 31, 2024 at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown, WV.
She was born on August 31, 1935, in Pinto, MD, to her loving parents, the late Baker Berkley and Dorothy Mae (Simpson) Lease. She also was preceded in death by her husband, Columbus J. Fleek on October 27, 1996; a brother, William Lease; three sisters, Kay Lease, Kathleen Haan and Wanda Fost; a son-in-law, Garey Moore; and brothers and sisters-in-law, Jimmy Dale McCusker, Bob Hanlin, Evelyn and Jimmy Hupp, Edna Fleek and Frances and Junior Clark.
Throughout her life, Leona, fondly known as "Onie," was a dedicated homemaker who poured her love and care into her church and family. Her selfless nature and giving spirit touched the lives of many. She was a pillar of strength and support to her children Kim Moore, Cindy Fleek, Chris Fleek, and Winnie, all of Keyser as well as her brothers Ronnie Lease and wife Carol of Cresaptown, MD and Baker Jack Lease and wife Betty of Rawlings, MD and two sisters Rae Hanlin of Pinto, MD and Helen McDowell and husband Kenny of Cresaptown. Also left to cherish her memory are her grandchildren, Angella (Shumaker) Kenney and husband Pat, Amy (Shumaker) Wilson and husband Paul and Glen Shumaker, III and great grandchildren, Ameillia Kenney, Abigail Simpson, Benjamin Wilson and Damien Shumaker as well as numerous nieces and nephews.
Leona's commitment to her faith was unwavering, as she was a life member of the Branch Full Gospel Church in McCoole, MD, where she once taught Sunday School. Her kindness and generosity made a positive impact on her community, leaving behind a legacy of love and compassion.
Those who had the privilege of knowing Leona will remember her for her gentle nature, warm smile, and nurturing presence. She possessed a special ability to make everyone feel welcomed and cherished. Her acts of kindness and thoughtfulness will forever be treasured by those whose lives she touched.
Friends will be received at the Smith Funeral Home, Keyser Chapel on Tuesday, November 5, 2024, from 5-7 p.m., and on Wednesday, November 6, 2024, from 1-2 p.m. A service to celebrate her life will be conducted at the funeral home at 2:00 p.m. on Wednesday, November 6, with Pastor Baker "Jack" Lease officiating. Leona will be laid to rest at the Potomac Memorial Gardens, Keyser.
In this time of mourning, let us embrace the legacy of love and kindness that Leona left behind. May her memory be a beacon of light in our hearts, guiding us with her example of selflessness and compassion.
