In loving memory of Elsa Aurora Cancino Hernandez
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Elsa Aurora Hernandez, a beautiful and devoted mother, grandmother, sister, daughter, and friend, who left us while surrounded by her loving family, on June 9, 2024 at the young age of 60.
Originally from Sabinas Coahuila, México, Elsa grew up in Uvalde where she stayed to build a loving home, raise her family and pursue her career. She remained a devoted daughter and caretaker to her aging mother until her passing in 2023.
Elsa dedicated her life to teaching, spending over 20 years as a pre-school teacher for TMC Head Start followed by over 12 years as a substitute teacher at Uvalde CISD. She received her Associate of Applied Science Degree in Child Development in 2002 from Southwest Texas Junior College in Uvalde followed by her Bachelor of Arts in Early Childhood Education Degree in 2013 from Ashford University in Clinton, Iowa. She completed both diplomas with near perfect grades giving her a designation of Magna Cum Laude and Summa Cum Laude respectively.
Photography, painting, cooking, and travel were a few of Elsa’s hobbies. She was an amazing cook and a jack of all trades. She was active, independent, self-sufficient, and fearless. She was passionate, kind, giving, helpful, and generous with her time to anyone that needed it. Elsa loved her pets, dedicating time to rescue and caring for them. More than anything else, Elsa loved her family, of whom Victory, her only granddaughter, held a significant piece of her heart. Elsa will be sorely missed by all who know and love her.
Elsa is survived by her daughter, Elsa Lopez of San Antonio; son, Edgar Lopez of Colorado; former husband Fortunato Lopez, Jr. of La Pryor; four sisters, Maria Hernandez of Dallas, Luz Maria Hernandez of Minnesota, Maria Julia Hernandez of Austin, Maria Guadalupe Medina of Piedras Negras, Mexico; three brothers, Santiago Hernandez and wife, Sandra of Florida, Efren Hernandez of Minnesota and Silverio Hernandez of Minnesota; grandchild, Victory Briseis Rodriguez; and numerous nieces and nephews. Elsa was preceded in death by her mother Aurora Cancino Hernandez, her father Ignacio Hernandez Cordova and sister, Carmen Hernandez Garcia.
Visitation will be held on Wednesday, June 19, 2024, at 2 p.m. with a rosary at 7 p.m. at Rushing-Estes-Knowles Mortuary. Visitors are invited to share their memories of Elsa with her family during the visitation. A funeral Mass will be held on Thursday, June 20, 2024, at 10 a.m. at Sacred Heart Catholic Church. Interment will follow at Hillcrest Cemetery.
Pallbearers will be Edgar Lopez, Fortunato Lopez, Jr., Andre Mordovin, Fadi Weshahi, Eleazar Weshahi, Tony Rodriguez, Sr. and Tony Rodriguez, Jr.
