Elsa Marie Smith was born on December 23rd, 1954, in Albuquerque, NM and left this world surrounded by the love of her family on March 4th, 2026, at the age of 71. Elsa was a beacon of light and love, cherished by all who had the privilege to know her.
She was an amazing mother to her son Demetrius who she loved more than anything in this world! They would create wonderful memories like fishing, making lots of arts and crafts, and every Sunday they would cook and play Mario Cart together.
Elsa's life was marked by her resilience and determination. Born hearing impaired, she attended the Santa Fe School for the Deaf, where she developed a love for learning that would follow her throughout her life. She furthered her education at Eastern New Mexico University, paving the way for a short but fulfilling career at St. Joseph’s Hospital as a Nurse’s Assistant and later, the Social Security Administration where she would later retire after 44 years of service. Her professional life was characterized by her unwavering dedication and her ability to touch lives with her kindness and humor. She was woman of deep faith and was an active member of The Albuquerque First Baptist Church.
Elsa was affectionately known as “The Check Lady,” by her daughter in law, a nod to her preference for writing checks over using debit cards wherever she went. This charming quirk was just one aspect of her delightful personality. Her main passion and talent was being an extremely gifted seamstress, sharing her beautiful crafts with family and friends, weaving love into every stitch. To know her is to know that one of her favorite hobbies was putting puzzles together with her family especially her mom. Her unique blend of humor and warmth made her a true comedian, always ready with a joke or a funny story.
Elsa was the beloved daughter of Eddie and Verena Smith, who have preceded her in death, along with her infant daughter, Janae; her brothers, Alvin, Dennis and Bryant Smith; her sister, Linda Walker; and her brother-in-law, Arthur Gee. Though she has now joined them, her spirit remains vibrant in the hearts of those she leaves behind.
She is survived by her devoted son, Demetrius Earl Smith Sr., his wife, Tanecia Smith. Her adored grandchildren, Zari Ana Smith, Demetrius Earl Smith Jr., and Prince Charming Shepherd Smith (Mother - Chakia Shepherd)., who knew her as their spirited and loving grandmother. Her nurturing spirit also lives on through her siblings Norma Price (Derwin Price), Suzette Gee, Geneva Smith and Trent Smith (Angie Smith) alongside a multitude of nieces, nephews, uncles, aunts and cousins who she loved abundantly and who, in turn, adored her.
One of Elsa's greatest joys in life was spending time with her grandchildren, especially her first grandchild, Zari, whom she lovingly described as "fast as lightning," recalling fond memories of playfully chasing her around the house.
Her departure leaves a void that will never be filled, but her legacy of love, humor, and resilience will forever be cherished. The family invites all who knew her to join in remembering and celebrating Elsa's remarkable life.
