Elsa Maria Velez

Elsa Velez, age 91, of Huron and formerly of Puerto Rico, passed away on Monday March 9, 2026, at Avantara - Huron.

Her funeral service was held at 4:00 PM, Monday, March 16, at the Kuhler Funeral Home. Her service was live-streamed.

Visitation was held one hour prior to the service at the funeral home on Monday.

Elsa Maria Velez Collazo, the daughter of Blas and Crescencia (Collazo) Velez Was born on December 10, 1934, in Juan Diaz, Puerto Rico. She attended school and graduated from high school. Elsa worked as a factory worker in Puerto Rico for a time until she attended a Colombia University program and received her degree as a legal secretary. Elsa worked as a legal secretary for the Police Headquarters in Puerto Rico for many years before moving to Huron in 2016.

Elsa was a member of the Catholic Church in Puerto Rico for many years. Elsa was a good athlete in high school and played on the volleyball team. She enjoyed cooking, sewing, jazz music and dancing. She liked watching baseball and cheering on her favorite team, the New York Mets. The times Elsa enjoyed most were the times she spent with her family and friends especially her children and grandchildren.

Grateful for having shared in Elsa’s life are her four children, Angel, Elsa, Nancy and Anthony; her nine grandchildren, Shirley Carida, Angel, Jonny, Jonathan, Jonathan C., Giovanie, Christian, Melissa and Alejandro; and eighteen great-grandchildren.

Elsa was preceded in death by her parents; her daughter, Maribel Colón; and her brother, Guillermo.
