Master Sergeant Elton Anthony Simmons, affectionately known as "Chuckie," a native of the coastal city of Mobile, Alabama, exchanged life for eternity on May 18th, 2025, at the age of 65, in Houston, Texas.
At an early age, Elton became a member of Faith Lutheran Church in Mobile, Alabama, where he was active in the congregation. After relocating to Texas, he joined Abiding Word Lutheran Church in Houston, where he served faithfully on the Board of Christian Education, reflecting his deep commitment to faith, service, and the spiritual growth of others.
After graduating from Ben C. Rain High School in 1978, Elton answered the call to serve his country, enlisting in the United States Army in 1979. Over the course of a distinguished 30-year military career in both the U.S. Army and U.S. Army Reserve, he dedicated 19 years as a Chemical Operations and Nuclear Biological Specialist. Elton served with honor in the Gulf War and Operation Desert Storm, and
completed two tours of duty in Afghanistan. As a proud member of the elite 82nd Airborne Division, he served as a paratrooper, exemplifying courage and commitment in every assignment. A highly decorated
soldier, Elton received numerous honors throughout his service, including the Meritorious Service Medal, Army Commendation Medal, Southwest Asia Service Medal with Bronze Service Star, National Defense Service Medal, among others.
While serving in the Army Reserve, Elton also built a strong civilian career. He worked for many years with United Parcel Service (UPS) and METRO, where he was known for his dependability and strong work ethic. He retired from military service in July 2009, as a part of the Southern Division, 75th Battle Command Training Division, leaving behind a lasting legacy of bravery, integrity, and sacrifice. Elton's unwavering dedication to his country and fellow soldiers will be remembered with deep respect and
gratitude. Later, he joined the United States Postal Service, where he was employed as a District Safety Specialist at the time of his passing. In this role, he was deeply committed to promoting workplace safety and supporting his colleagues, earning their admiration and respect across the district.
He was preceded in death by his father and mother, Nathaniel and Adelaide Simmons; and his brother, Barry Simmons.
Elton was a devoted husband, father, son, and brother. He leaves to forever cherish his memories a loving and devoted wife of 19 years, Stacey Simmons; six children: Anthony, Chante, and Annette Simmons, all of Houston, TX; Terence Washington, of Kansas City, MO; and Darrien (Jessica) and Deja Washington, both of Atlanta, GA; grandchildren: Prynce, Amora, Malachi, Jah, and Lily, who lovingly referred to him as "Opa."
Elton's legacy continues through his loving siblings: Carolyn Johnson of Sterling Heights, MI; Pamela (Calvin) Miffin of Quinton, VA; Terry Simmons, Gregory (Connie) Simmons, Cathy Sellars, and Gwendolyn Simmons, all of Mobile, AL; brothers-in-law, Melvin (Peggy) Evans of Mobile, AL and Traveis (Angela) Evans of Greensboro, NC; and a loving mother-in-law, Ruby K. Evans, of Mobile, AL.
In addition, Elton leaves behind a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family, and dear friends; two devoted, Brinkley "Brent" Quinnie, and Jewel Simmons, who will forever cherish his memory.
