Elvie passed away on October 23, 2025, in the presence of her loving husband Fred and Northern Hills UMC senior pastor Lupina Stewart. Several family members and friends from all over the world visited her via Zoom shortly before her passing.
Elvira (Elvie) Tolentino Tumlos Clark was born in Hipona Pontevedra Capiz, central Philippines on May 24, 1953 to Evangelina Tolentino Tumlos and Eliseo Tumlos, and is the oldest of six children. She was valedictorian from high school in 1970, and she holds a Bachelor of Science in Chemistry from Central Philippines University, Iloilo City, Philippines. She later attended the Asian Institute of Technology in Bangkok, Thailand on a full scholarship where she earned a Master of Science in Environmental Technology and Management in 1981. She was awarded international scholarships from the governments of Japan, Federal Republic of Germany, and The Netherlands, and she received an Environmental Science Diploma in International Institute of Hydraulics and Environmental Engineering in Delft, The Netherlands.
Elvie was an Associate Professor at University of the Philippines (UP), Los Banos, Laguna, Philippines from 1989 to 2001, when she emigrated to California. She became a U.S. citizen in April 2007. She taught chemistry for five years at King Drew Medical Magnet High School of Medicine and Science, Los Angeles, and substitute taught in Florida for 10 years.
Elvie met Fred Clark in early 2007 through eHarmony, a religious dating website, while she lived in California and Fred lived in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Elvie and Fred were married at United Baptist Church, Carson, CA on January 1, 2008. Elvie and Fred lived briefly in Minnesota, then 10 years in Florida and finally in San Antonio, Texas since 2019.
Elvie was always active in whatever church she was a member of, and she absolutely loved her friends from Northern Hills, where she was a member of several classes at different times. Elvie was an enthusiastic sports fan, following the basketball Warriors, the baseball Blue Jays, and the football Dallas Cowboys. She and Fred were season ticket holders for the class A+ Dunedin (FL) Blue Jays for years. She enjoyed traveling, especially on trips to U.S. and Canadian parks and places planned by Fred, and shopping at H-E-B and Marshalls. She enjoyed telling jokes, something she demonstrated to Fred from early in their courtship and throughout their marriage.
Elvie was preceded in death by her parents and brother Evelio (Bong) Tumlos, but is survived by her husband Fred and her two stepchildren Daniel and Rachel. She is survived also by three sisters and one brother, Eliwyn Liptzin, Evaristo (Evar) Tumlos, Elma Labuson, and Elaine Peralta, several nephews, nieces, and in laws, hundreds of cousins and thousands of friends.
A Celebration of Life service will be held on Saturday, November 22, 2025, at Northern Hills United Methodist Church, 3703 N. Loop 1604 East, San Antonio, TX 78247, at 11 a.m. CST in the sanctuary. It can be viewed on the Northern Hills (www.nhumc.org) YouTube channel. Memorials can be made in Elvie's honor to Northern Hills United Methodist Church.
