Elwyn D. Cooper

Elwyn D. Cooper, beloved father and grandfather, passed away on August 8, 2025, at the age of 91. Born on August 10, 1933, Elwyn lived a life filled with dedication, love, and remarkable accomplishments.

Elwyn spent most of his professional career as a pricing analyst for Yellow Freight, where he was not only known for his strong work ethic but also for earning the respect and affection of his colleagues. His contributions to the company were marked by both diligence and camaraderie, solidifying his reputation as a dedicated worker.

In 1957, Elwyn married his cherished wife, Katie. Together, they shared 31 beautiful years filled with love and commitment, navigating both joys and sorrows. The couple faced heartbreaking losses with the premature births of their first two children but persevered to raise four beautiful daughters. Their family life was grounded in love and togetherness, with Elwyn firmly believing that family came first. Sadly, Katie passed away from breast cancer in 1988 at the young age of 49, leaving an indelible mark on Elwyn and his precious daughter’s hearts.

Elwyn's early education laid the groundwork for his achievements. He graduated from Viola High School in 1952, where he notably served as Senior Class President. He received a scholarship to play basketball at Beebe Junior College, but a severe automobile accident altered the course of his athletic aspirations. After a period of recovery, Elwyn went on to complete his college education, earning a degree in mathematics with a minor in science.

Beyond his career, Elwyn found joy in pitching horseshoes, a passion he nurtured since childhood. His dedication to the sport led him to join the Heart of America Horseshoe Club in the spring of 1975, where he became an active member for an impressive 49 years. Elwyn served as the club's president from 1980 to 1997 and qualified for many World Tournaments, showcasing his remarkable talent. In recognition of his contributions to the sport, he was inducted into the Missouri Horseshoe Pitchers Hall of Fame in 1993, an honor that underscored his significant achievements.

Elwyn took great pride in being a father and grandfather, cherishing the countless moments spent with his family. His unwavering love for them defined his life, and his legacy will be remembered for the warmth and kindness he extended to those around him.

Family, friends, and colleagues are invited to pay their respects during visitation on August 15, 2025, from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM at Terrace Park Funeral Home & Cemetery, located at 801 NW 108th St, Kansas City, MO 64155. The funeral service will follow at 11:00 AM, with a graveside service taking place at 12:00 PM.

Elwyn D. Cooper's spirit will live on in the hearts of all who were fortunate to know him. His legacy of love, dedication, and community will be cherished and remembered for generations to come.

Elwyn is preceded in death by his parents Amiel and Annie Cooper; his wife Katie Cooper; and 5 brothers.

He is survived by his daughters; Vicky Slaybaugh (Jerry), Terresa Jones (Jack), Janet Taylor, Nancy Ley (Jim); his sister Dora Hall; brother Gary Cooper, 9 grandchildren and 11 great grandchildren, as well as his companion Dee McIntire of many years; and numerous other family members and friends.
