Elyda Marie Handegard was born to Ella and Julius Omberg on November 22, 1933, in Hawley MN. She was baptized at Solum Lutheran Church in Hawley. At age ten she moved to Lake Park MN with her family. She was confirmed at Lake Park Lutheran Church and attended Lake Park schools graduating in 1951. She worked for Drs. Midthune and Houglum until 1955.
On December 31, 1954, she was united in marriage to Harvey Handegard. In 1956 they made their home in Detroit Lakes. This union was blessed with four children, Harley, Diane, Annette and Janel.
In 1962 she began working as a bookkeeper for Wilcox Lumber. The company changed names several times throughout the years and in 1995 she retired.
She was active in Lincoln School activities and served on the PTA. She was a member of a Homemakers Club and served as president of the Eagles Auxiliary and chaplain of the Ritual Team.
Church was important to Elyda where she served on Action Corp, the kitchen team, Rachel Circle, as funeral coordinator and a quilter. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, camping with Harvey and traveling through the US and Canada.
An important part of her life was time spent with her children, eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren.
Surviving Elyda are her four children, Harley (Karen), Diane (Mike), Annette (Ron) and Janel (Mark), her eight grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren, several nieces and nephews and sister-in-law Lorna Handegard.
Preceding her in death were her husband, parents and brother, Julian.
