Emery Edward Balthrop of Lookout Mountain Tennessee, peacefully went to be with the Lord at age 72, on Wednesday, March 6th, in Chattanooga Tennessee.
He was born in a small town in Tennessee called Newbern, on January 30th, 1952, to parents Dorthy Jean Mooney and Jesse Boyd Mooney. He was preceded in death by his parents and two siblings, Jeanne Suzanne Mooney and David Michael Mooney. The family moved to a few small towns in Tennessee including Dyersburg before moving to Toledo, Ohio. While in Toledo, he received his high school education at Start High School. He met his future wife, Maribeth Balthrop while attending the same church in Toledo. They were happily married in 1972. He attended and received certification at Apostolic Bible Institute in St. Paul, Minnesota for his college education. Sensing a call to serve the Lord, he was ordained as a minister in 1973.
Emery and Maribeth moved to Jasper, Tennessee, where Emery was the Pastor at a church. While in Jasper, their family grew as they had a son and a daughter. They eventually moved their family to their current residence on the Tennessee side of Lookout Mountain. Looking for a way to support his family better, he began working at Rone Regency Jewelers as a salesman and continued in the same position when the company was acquired by Fink's Jewelers. He amassed more than 45 years of experience working as a jewelry Sales Professional. He was recently featured in the Employee Spotlight in Fink's Jewelers Magazine for his outstanding work and loyalty. The article describes his relationship with his clients as "unparalleled." Above all, Emery loved his family and would do anything in his power to make their lives better. The word selfish never touched his name.
Although Emery wasn't actively preaching, he continued to walk faithfully with God. His steadfast faith in the Lord was by far one of the highest priorities in his life. He had an avid love for learning and reading, with friends recounting that he always had a new book recommendation for them. He had a fascination for war history and began collecting and intricately painting toy soldiers and figurines in 1976. He collected several hundred toy soldiers, displaying them in battle scenes and elaborate dioramas. Along with the toy soldiers, he had a large collection of other miscellaneous war memorabilia. He loved sitting in his recliner to relax and watch his favorite college football team Roll Tide!
Emery was survived by his loving wife Maribeth Balthrop; son Chris Balthrop and daughter DeAnn Balthrop; Grandchildren Quin Balthrop, Sileas Balthrop, and Connor Balthrop; Sister-in-law Katie Mooney; Niece Emma Kate Mooney and nephew Davis Mooney (Hannah); and great-nephews Winston Mooney and William Mooney. He is also survived by countless loving friends and his furry best bud, Scout the dog.
The memorial service will be held at Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church at 12pm on Thursday, March 14th. The service will be officiated by Emery's nephew Davis Mooney. All are welcome to help honor his wonderful life and memory. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to the Mercy Fund at Lookout Mountain Presbyterian Church.
