Emma Floy Cleaves was born on August 15, 1940, in Oakland, Tennessee, to Daisy Murrell and Louis Cleaves, both of whom have preceded her in death.
She attended Fayette County Training School in Somerville, Tennessee, where she completed her 12 years of education.
Emma loved spending time with her family, especially during vacations and reunions, which always brought her joy until her health began to decline. She had a special gift for cooking, especially holiday meals, and she poured her heart into preparing them. Known for her quiet spirit, compassion, and deep love for others, Emma was the happiest when surrounded by loved ones. She also enjoyed traveling and eagerly looked forward to any opportunity for a trip.
She began her career as an assembly worker at Health Tech Inc. in Totowa, NJ from 1999 to 2001. Later, she worked as a kitchen aide at the YWCA in Paterson, NJ, from 2003 to 2005, before taking a position at the Federation Building in Paterson, NJ, until her retirement. Emma was a dedicated team member, admired and respected by both co-workers and management alike.
Emma was preceded in death by her sisters, Agnes Cleaves, Mary Charleston, Mildred Cleaves, Rosie Cleaves, Priscilla Sears, her brother, Vernon Cleaves, and her nephews Dennis and Tyson Cleaves.
She leaves behind cherished memories with her beloved sisters Dorothy Cleaves, Ruby Jean Cleaves, Modistyne Boyd (John), Marilyn Currie, Hattie Cleaves and loving brothers Ervin Cleaves (Maggie) and Richard Cleaves. She also leaves behind a special niece, Tilda Cleaves, great niece, Jasmine Johnson and great nephews Tyshon and Tyriek Cleaves. She is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
Let the family know you care by leaving your condolences, favorite memories and thoughts and prayers on the Tribute Wall.
