Emma L. Young, 94, of Providence, died on Sunday, December 14th, with her family by her side. She was the beloved wife of the late Raymond Proffitt Young, Jr. Born in
Wendell, North Carolina, she was the daughter of the late Roosevelt and Rose Ann (Ferrell) Robertson.
Throughout her professional life, Emma dedicated herself to caring for others as a Certified Nursing Assistant. She spent more than 30 years working at the former MHRH Department of Mental Health, Retardation, and Hospitals in
Cranston, RI. Her long-standing commitment and compassionate service touched the lives of many. Emma was a devoted member of the Cathedral of Saint John, actively participating until its closure in 2012. She served with the Episcopal Church Women (ECW), Altar Guild, and volunteered at the soup kitchen. Afterward, she attended Saint Luke's Episcopal Church and remained involved until her passing.
Emma especially enjoyed playing card games and bingo. She also enjoyed playing board games with her grandchildren and great-grandchild. In her younger years, Emma took the opportunity to travel and visit family members. These journeys allowed her to nurture and strengthen her relationships with loved ones, creating lasting memories and reinforcing the close-knit bonds that were so important to her throughout her life. Emma took immense pride in observing the growth and accomplishments of her children and family members. Family was at the center of Emma's life, and gatherings-especially the Robertson family reunion-were particularly meaningful to her. She truly cherished every moment spent together with her loved ones, treasuring the time they shared and the memories they created as a close-knit family.
For the past two and a half years, Emma resided at the Highlands on the East Side an assisted living facility in Providence RI. During this time, she received attentive and compassionate care from the dedicated staff. The family would like to express their deepest gratitude to the Reflections Unit on the second floor: CNA's, RN's/LPN's, Medtech's, and all those who played a role in her care. Your kindness, respect, and genuine affection were deeply appreciated, and the love you showed to our mother will always be remembered.
Emma is survived by her four children: Raymond Proffitt Young III, Petrina Ann Coble, Stephanie Louise Howie, and Jorge Roosevelt Young; as well as five grandchildren, one great-grandchild, and sister, Barbara Sowah. She was predeceased by her siblings, Dazola Turner, William Robertson, and Edward Robertson.
Visitation is scheduled at A.A. Mariani & Son Funeral Home, located at 200 Hawkins Street, Providence, on Friday, December 19th, from 10:00 a.m. until 12:00 p.m., with the funeral service to commence immediately thereafter at 12:00 p.m. Interment will follow at Swan Point Cemetery, Providence.
