Emmel Ray Garton, Jr. of Barrackville passed away on Friday, October 10, 2025, at Ruby Memorial Hospital in Morgantown. He was born in South Charleston, West Virginia on September 01, 1950, a son of the late Emmel Ray and Florence Eleanor Kinder Garton, Sr.
He is survived by his loving wife of 54 years Mary Ellen Chapman Garton.
Ray was a Geologist and a Paleontologist by profession and was the owner and operator of Prehistoric Planet LLC. He was also quite proud to be the curator of West Virginia Geological and Economic Survey Museum at Mt. Chateau in Morgantown. Ray was passionate about anything and everything Fossil and Dinosaur related. He was affectionately known as "Woolly Mammoth" to his family and friends.
In keeping with his wishes his body will be cremated and Carpenter and Ford Funeral Home is honored to be assisting the family with these arrangements. A celebration of life will be held at a later date.

I took a class taught by Ray and I learned so much! He took us fossil hunting, which is something I dreamed of doing as a little girl. I spent a lot of time as a child digging in the dirt, hoping to find a fossil. Ray was the one who taught me there would not be dinosaur fossils in my yard, but it was fun at the time. There may not be dinosaur fossils here, but there are other types. I was excited when Ray taught us where to look and showed us what to look for. Thank you Ray for sharing your knowledge and making a childhood dream come true! You fueled the imaginations and satisfied the curiosity of many, I'm sure.
