Obituary published on Legacy.com by Guare & Sons, Barber & Lanier Funeral and Cremation Services - Montpelier on Jun. 26, 2025.
Montpelier, VTIt is with a heavy heart that we announce the passing of Ennis John Gidney, who left us
peacefully, surrounded by his family on June 16, 2025, at the age of 87. Ennis was born on
February 5, 1938, in
Montpelier, VT, and spent his life dedicated to his family and community.
Ennis, a proud graduate of Montpelier High School and Bentley College, went on to make his
mark as a Chief Economist for the State of Vermont's Public Service Board, where he worked
tirelessly for nearly five decades before retiring in 2007. His commitment to public service
didn't stop there; he also volunteered as the Board President of the Vermont State Employees
Credit Union and served as treasurer of the Trinity United Methodist Church in Montpelier for
over 30 years.
In addition to his professional accomplishments, Ennis served in the Vermont Air National
Guard, exemplifying the dedication and spirit of service that defined his character.
Ennis also enjoyed gardening, mowing the lawn on his tractor, and watching sports, especially
the Boston Celtics and the Detroit Lions. He was most happy watching his grandchildren play
the sports they loved, whether that was at an ice rink playing hockey or on a baseball field. He
was proud of all their accomplishments. Ennis's favorite time of year was going to deer camp in
Groton with his beloved network of friends who were like family to him.
Ennis's kindness, generosity, wisdom, integrity, and common sense were cornerstones that
epitomized who he was, and he will be greatly missed.
Ennis married the love of his life, Jane Sprague, on February 29, 1964, at the West Hill Church in
Chelsea, VT. They built a beautiful family together, including their daughters Carolyn Terhune
(Brian) and Melanie Gidney Fernandez (Ramon) who will forever cherish the love and guidance
he provided. He was a proud grandfather to Daniel Terhune, John Terhune, Rachel Fernandez,
and John Fernandez, who will miss his warmth, humor, and wisdom dearly. Ennis also leaves
behind his sister, Roberta Morse (Sherwood), and several beloved nieces and nephews, who
shared many fond memories with him.
Ennis was preceded in death by his parents, Robert and Europa Gidney; and his siblings,
William, Richard, and Mittie Gidney.
Friends and family are invited to join us in celebrating Ennis's life. A memorial service will be
held at Guare & Sons Funeral Home on Friday July 11, 2025, at 1:00 PM. A reception will
immediately follow at the same location. Please gather with us to share stories, laughter, and,
most importantly, memories of a man who touched our lives.
The family would like to thank Dr. Emily Jones and his hospice team for the incredible care he
received.
