Eric Hommema, 50, of Roscoe, IL, passed away with his wife, Amy, by his side on Friday, October 10, 2025, after a 12-year battle with brain cancer.
He was born on September 3, 1975, in Rockford, IL, the son of Edward and Linda (Pearson) Hommema. He was raised and educated in Rockford, graduating from Guilford High School. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Biochemistry from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign in 1997, followed by a Master's of Science in Chemistry from Bowling Green State University in Bowling Green, OH, in 1999.
On May 6, 2000, Eric and Amy were married in Mahomet, IL. They recently celebrated their 25th wedding anniversary.
Eric worked as a Biochemical Research Scientist for 25 years. He spent the first five years of his career at the Cleveland Clinic in Ohio and Biacore in North Carolina, and the last 20 years at Thermo Fisher Scientific in Rockford until his passing.
Eric was an avid fan of Chicago sports - Bears, Cubs, Bulls, and Blackhawks. He was a loyal alumni of the Illini at the University of Illinois. He played tennis and soccer in high school, earned his 1st Degree Black Belt in Tae Kwon Do in 2017, was a league bowler at Viking Lanes and Don Carter Lanes for several years, and was a member of the Thermo Fisher Softball team for over 15 years. He loved nature and being outdoors and a loyal friend to many.
Survived by his wife, parents, children, Ryan Hommema and Michael Hommema; in-laws, Allen and Karen Brucker; brothers, Scott (Jennifer) Hommema, and Kevin (Laurie) Hommema; nieces, Emmy Hommema and Clara Hommema, and several aunts, uncles, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Charles and Margaret Hommema, and Lloyd and Louise Pearson.
A special thank you to the doctors and nurses at Mayo Clinic and UW Health System, as well as to the continued support of family and friends through all the celebrations and struggles.
In lieu of flowers, memorials can be made to the family or to the National Brain Tumor Society. (www.braintumor.org)

I was so very sorry to hear about the loss of Eric, as were the other members of the Miller family. Eric, Scott, and Kevin were always the most lovely, well-behaved brothers at First Presbyterian Church--I noticed this even as a fellow church kid myself, but now as a mother of boys, it seems all the more amazing. What a beautiful legacy he leaves behind--his intelligence and thoughtfulness, pride in his alma mater and Chicago sports, engagement in the community, and of course his love for his family. I am so sorry for your loss and am keeping the entire Hommema family in my prayers here in Virginia.
