John Chapman Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by McMurrough Funeral Chapel - Libertyville on Feb. 24, 2026.
John E. Chapman, a man defined by a gentle spirit and a lifetime of music, passed away peacefully on February 22, 2026, surrounded by the family he adored. Born in Chicago to Donald and Barbara Chapman, John's life was set to a musical score from the very beginning. A consummate musician and considered a prodigy by many, he was already at the keyboard of St. Athanasius church organ by age 12. His academic journey followed his passion, leading him from Evanston High School to Lawrence University, and ultimately to the University of Illinois Urbana-Champaign, where he earned his Master's in Organ Performance and Literature.

John's career was a testament to his dedication to both community and craft. While he served as the Director of Interlibrary Loan at Cook Library, his heart beat most strongly at the organ bench. During his 25-year tenure as Music Director at St. Joseph Parish, he met the love of his life-his soloist and future wife. Their partnership in music and life spanned decades, continuing through tenures at St. Norbert in Northbrook and the Church of St. Mary in Lake Forest.

Beyond the music, John was known for his big heart, infectious laugh, and an uncanny ability to find the good in everyone he met. He was a calming, kind presence with a quick wit that brightened any room. While his titles were many-Director, Musician, Colleague-his favorites by far were "Husband, Dad, and Grandpa." Though the earthly pipes have gone quiet, his family takes comfort in knowing he is surely leading the heavenly choir today. He will be missed beyond measure.

John is survived by his wife of 39 years Anamarie; his daughter Anne (Phil) Lecaroz; and his granddaughter Maia. He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother Donald.

Visitation for John will be from 3:00 – 7:00 PM on Friday February 27th at McMurrough Funeral Chapel, 101 Park Pl, Libertyville with a prayer service at 7:00 PM. Interment will be at 10:00 AM on Saturday February 28th at Ascension Catholic Cemetery, 1920 Buckley Rd, Libertyville. In lieu of flowers, memorials made to Felines and Canines, 6379 N Paulina St, Chicago, IL 60660, would be greatly appreciated. https://donatenow.networkforgood.org/FelinesAndCanines
