Eric McElveen Obituary

Visit the Beam Funeral Service & Crematory - Marion website to view the full obituary.

Eric Winfield McElveen, age 58, passed away on November 1, 2025. Eric was a devoted father, cherished by his three children—Erin McElveen of Asheville , Kyle and Emily McElveen of Marion, NC—who were the center of his world. He was also a loving brother to Kelly McElveen Cain of Morganton and a dear cousin to Steve Cox of Morganton. Above all, Eric was devoted to his beloved grandson, Raiden Robinson of Asheville, who brought him immense joy.

Born to James McElveen and Martha "Twinker" Mauney McElveen, whom he lovingly remembered after their passing, Eric carried forward their legacy of empathy and strength throughout his life.

Proud of his Scottish heritage, Eric joyfully honored his clan traditions, often wearing his kilt with delight and displaying the clan motto, "Touch not a catt bot a targe," tattooed on his right arm—a symbol of his fierce loyalty and spirit.

Eric’s professional life was marked by dedication and expertise. He worked for many years as an IT specialist at Corning Fiber Optics and previously contributed his talents in the technology department at McDowell Technical Community College.

A lifelong learner, Eric earned his Associate in Science degree from McDowell Technical Community College and later graduated from Gardner-Webb University with a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He also attended His Hill Bible College in Texas, where he studied scripture and deepened his understanding of the word of God. Known throughout his family and friends as the go-to person who could fix anything with a computer, Eric’s skill and patience were unmatched.

His passions brought joy and color - especially UK blue - to his life. He was perhaps the University of Kentucky basketball team’s biggest fan, cheering them on with unmatched enthusiasm. He bled Kentucky blue. An avid reader, Eric especially loved fantasy novels, with the Game of Thrones series holding a special place in his heart. One of his greatest joys was attending Dragon Con regularly, where he found community and celebration of the things he loved. His friends always remember him as the life of the party, bringing laughter and joy to all. Eric had a special affection for playing trivia and was often the lively trivia host at local restaurants, where his quick wit and friendly spirit brought people together for fun and friendly competition.

Eric’s warmth, loyalty, and enthusiasm touched everyone who knew him. He had a remarkable ability to bring joy, leaving behind memories filled with laughter, compassion, and unwavering love.

Though his presence will be deeply missed, his spirit lives on in the hearts of his family and friends, inspiring all who were fortunate to know him.

A celebration of Eric’s life will be held to honor his enduring legacy and the profound impact he made on those around him. The family will receive friends on Thursday, November 6, 2025 from 1:00 until 2:00 p.m. at Glenwood Baptist Church. The celebration of life will begin at 2:00 p.m. at the church and will be officiated by Pastor Michael Robinson and Rev. Jim Brewer. Interment will follow at Oak Grove Cemetery.
