Eric Nottingham Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Campbell Funeral Home - Beverly on Feb. 7, 2022.
Eric Bruce Nottingham, 54, died unexpectedly on February 3, 2022 at Lahey Burlington. He is survived by his wife, Bethany Anne (Maitland) Nottingham and children, Jack, Paige and Charlie Nottingham all of Merrimac, MA; Mother and Stepfather Janet (Juel) Cook and Garry Cook of Swampscott, MA; Brothers Todd Nottingham and Terence Cook; Aunts, Barbara (Samuel) Kessel, Gail (Dennis) Flynn, Carol (Dan) Koerner, Janet (Marc) O'Brien; Uncles, Richard (Nina) Juel, Robert (Elaine) Cook; Cousins Leanne (Craig) Smith, Amy Kessel, Dana Kessel, Lisa (Jesse) Tremblay, Tracey (Rob) Pelletier, Erin (Nelson) Nutter, Dana Koerner, Harrison Koerner, Christopher Juel, Rikki Waterhouse (Thomas Collier), Kim Waterhouse, Richard Waterhouse, and Tracy Steele; Mother-in-Law Patricia Maitland; Brother-in-Law Scott Maitland (Stephanie); Nephews, Evan, Adam and Ryan Maitland; Niece, Margaret Nottingham. Preceding him in death was his father, Bruce Nottingham of Tucson, AZ and Father-In-Law, Richard Maitland.
Eric graduated from Marblehead High School, Worcester Academy and received his Bachelor of Arts Degree from the University of New Hampshire.
Eric currently served as the Director of Quality Assurance Validation at CRISPR Therapeutics in Cambridge, MA. He previously held positions at AGC Biologics, Genzyme, Biogen, Pfizer, Wyeth and Serono Laboratories.
Eric was an avid fisherman, passionate gardener, and talented guitar player. He spent countless hours on the Nauti Mates with the Fat Guy and other fishing pals trying to land the big one. When he wasn't fishing, you could always find Eric working tirelessly in his garden. He loved sharing the fruits of his labor and knowledge of gardening with everyone.
He recently was so excited to share his love of the guitar with his oldest son, Jack. He instilled in his children the importance of music and encouraged each of them to play a musical instrument. This led to the creation of the Nottingham family band better known as the "Not In Tunes". Paige on the Piano, Charlie on the bongoes, Jack and Eric on the guitar and Bethany on the Tamborine. While not quite as successful as his college band, Mosquitoes Don't Drive, the Not In Tunes gave it their best try!
Eric played an important role in the success of the 1985 State Championship Marblehead High baseball team. Bethany was reminded of this every time they drove through Newburyport searching for his infamous home run ball that supposedly hasn't landed yet. Somewhere during his successful baseball career he earned the nickname "Chowdah". He will be forever known by this name.
Eric was also a devoted hockey dad. Always making sure his backyard ice rink was the perfect smoothness for skating. He taught his 3 children how to skate as soon as they were upright and insisted on the importance of learning to skate backwards first!
Anyone who knew him well knew his love for movie quotes. He could recite every line from Jaws, Caddyshack and other famous 70's and 80's movies. He would often integrate these lines into daily life and parenting. "You'll get nothing and like it!"
Eric loved fiercely and deeply. He was selfless and would always lend a hand to anyone in the blink of an eye. He was a light in everyone's lives and will be sorely missed by all.
There will a celebration of Eric's life at the Jubilee Yacht Club, 126 Water St. Beverly, MA on Friday, February 11, 2022 at 1:00 p.m. All are welcome to come share stories, laughs and Eric ism's!

Dear Bethany, Jack, Paige, and Charlie, We offer you our deepest condolences for the sudden and untimely passing of your wonderful Husband/Dad. We remember Eric as a toddler as he was younger than our older daughter, Kris, and older than our younger daughter, Katy. They are now 57 and 52. A fond memory was taking boat trips on Bruce's Whaler to Crane's Beach with our little ones! I (Roger) was honored to be Eric's High School Baseball Coach and will never forget the major contributions he made to our 1985 State MHS Baseball Team. The memory that particularly stands out is the monster tournament game "Chowdah" had against arch rival Swampscott. He knocked in several runs in that game which allowed our team to continue its triumphant title march. Perhaps more important, was Eric's character and personality. He had the ability to keep our team focused , but never lost sight of simply having fun playing the Grand Old Game. I regret not being able to share our mutual love of fishing with Eric as we mentioned doing so when your family moved back to Massachusetts. May the many fond family memories you have of Eric help you move forward as you grieve your loss. God bless the Eric Nottingham Family. RIP CHOWDAH!

My condolences to your family. I can remember every time seeing your mom and Gary they would tell me how well you were doing and how great everything was with you and your family. I also remember sitting up in your room playing stairway to heaven and singing our brains out. You´ll be missed dearly. You will always be remembered as "chowdah ".
