Eric Simmons went home to be with the Lord on February 9, 2022, at age 64.
Eric was born to Cyrus and Ocee Simmons on July 2, 1957, in Fort Valley, Georgia. He matriculated through the Fort Valley school system and excelled in football on Peach County Comprehensive High School's varsity football team. He graduated from Heidelberg College in 1979 with a Bachelor's degree in Psychology. During his time there he was a devoted member of his fraternity, Sigma Tau Nu.
Eric met his wife, Del Charlene, in kindergarten. They married nineteen years later on June 20, 1981, and went on to have two children, Jacinta and Joshua, that they raised together in Ohio. He worked many years for The State of Ohio and retired in 2009 from The Department of Rehabilitations and Corrections. In 2014, they returned to Georgia to live out their retirement years. In addition to being a dedicated, loving husband and father, Eric also loved being "Papa Eric." His last job, which he thoroughly enjoyed, was chauffeuring his grandchildren to and from school, gymnastics, and martial arts.
Eric began his journey in Prince Hall Affiliated Masonry in Columbus, OH when he was raised as a Master Mason in King David Lodge No. 116 on January 21, 2000. He was extremely active and rose through the leadership to serve as Worshipful Master of his lodge as well as being a member of the Prince Hall Grand Lodge Security Team. He was created a Companion in John C. Logan Chapter No. 53, Royal Arch Masons. He further advanced by receiving the Chivalric Degree of Sublime Prince of the Royal Secret in L.D. Easton Consistory No. 21. He continued to move in masonry by becoming a Noble in the Ancient Egyptian Arabic Order Nobles of the Mystic Shrine. He was created a Noble on July 14, 2003, in Alla Baba Temple No. 53. He rose through the leadership ranks of the Temple to serve as the Illustrious Potentate in 2006. Eric then continued to serve the Temple as Recorder (Secretary) and as an Advisor to the Daughters (women's auxiliary). Past Potentate Simmons maintained his membership in Alla Baba Temple even after he and Del Charlene moved to Georgia. Eric was also a fervent member of Grace Chapter No. 100, Order of the Eastern Star. He served in the office of Worthy Patron in the chapter for two straight years.
If you asked him, Eric would assist and more importantly, inspire all of us to be better and do better. Eric was truly a dedicated member of the Masonic family, and we will all miss his leadership, comradery and friendship that has and will endure.
Throughout his entire life, he held an unwavering faith in God, which he shared with those who surrounded him. As a result of his many years of service in the Ohio community, he was awarded the distinguished honor of becoming a Kentucky Colonel.
Eric joins his parents, Cyrus and Ocee, and his granddaughter, Payton, in Heaven. He is survived by his wife, Del Charlene, his siblings, D'Walla and Cyrus (Alta), his children, Jacinta (Lawrence) and Joshua, and his grandchildren, Tyson and Kyndall. He is also survived by his canine best friend, Lucy Jo, nieces and nephews, and a host of cousins, other family members and friends.
Psalm 91:11 "For He will give His angels charge concerning you, to guard you in all your ways."
Exodus 23:20 "See, I am sending an angel ahead of you to guard you along the way and to bring you to the place I have prepared."
