Erma McLaughlin Obituary

Erma Mae McLaughlin
April 23, 1926 - January 13, 2026
Erma Mae was born on April 23, 1926, in Columbus, Ohio, to John (Giovanni) and Martha Loretta, and was the youngest of four siblings who all preceded her in death - Miles Loretta, Joseph Loretta, and Teresa Loretta Young. Erma lived a remarkable life of faith, service, and resilience, spanning a full century of history. After losing her mother at the young age of six, her childhood memories centered around a loving Italian father raising four children in a home filled with music, food, and neighbors - as theirs was the house with a radio.
At fifteen, her love of dancing was interrupted by World War II, when she joined the wartime effort as a skilled welder. Her expertise led her to become an instructor and to help introduce Heliarc welding to Columbus. She worked on bombers used during the war, including the B-29 Enola Gay.
Erma married Andrew McLaughlin and raised three children: Hugh McLaughlin (Rosemary), Jeri-Jean Vella Ferre (Frank), and Brenda Brown (Anthony). She later retired from welding, worked for Sanese Services as a Director of Hostesses, and faithfully served at Highland Baptist Church in Grove City, Ohio. She was an avid bowler, enjoyed traveling, and playing Euchre with friends and family.
Known most affectionately as "Memaw," Erma poured love into the lives of her grandchildren-Mark Vella; Teresa Workman (David); Nicholas Brown (Katrina); Trace Ferre (Jennifer); and Tarah Ferre-and her great-grandchildren: Arteya, Ella Mae, David, J.T., Jordan, Cambrie and Maddax.
In her later years, Erma lived in Buford, Georgia, surrounded by family. A lifelong Buckeye, Erma would never miss watching an Ohio State football or basketball game. She was blessed to enjoy visits, calls and cards from her many nieces, nephews, and beloved friends after moving from Ohio.
Above all, Erma's life was rooted in faith and family. She now rests in the presence of her Savior, leaving behind a legacy of unwavering faith, perseverance, and love that will endure for generations.
"I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith." (2 Timothy 4:7)
A celebration of Life will be scheduled in Ohio to honor Erma's 100th birthday in April.
