Ernest Barnes Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Grace Funeral Home - Goliad on Mar. 16, 2026.
Ernest Edward Barnes, age 75, of Goliad, Texas, passed away on March 12, 2026, in Victoria, Texas. He was born on September 20, 1950, in San Antonio, Texas, to Chester and Helen Peters Barnes.

On July 15, 2002, Ernest married the love of his life, Virginia "Ginny" Church, in St. Hedwig, Texas. Their 25 years together were filled with companionship, adventure, and unwavering devotion. After many long talks and one meaningful visit, Ginny left the cold behind and moved to Texas. Side by side, they met life's joys and challenges, ultimately finding purpose in serving others.

Ernest proudly served his country in the United States Army from August 1970 to March 1979, including service in Vietnam. He received the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Palm, the Good Conduct Medal, and the Sharpshooter Badge. During his military career, he served in both the Medical Corps and as a Behavioral Science Specialist, offering vital care and support to his fellow soldiers.

Raised in the Catholic faith, Ernest was baptized and confirmed in San Antonio and attended Catholic school until age 16-an upbringing that shaped his values throughout his life. After his military service, he worked as a lab technician with Redland Worth until his retirement.

In retirement, Ernest and Ginny found a shared passion for volunteering. They began with the National Park Service at the San Antonio Missions and later continued their service at Goliad State Park. Over 11 years and more than 5,000 hours, they greeted visitors, served as park hosts, and helped preserve Texas history. Ernest especially loved researching the mission sites, particularly Mission Rosario. He spent countless hours studying archives, books, and historical reports, eventually becoming one of the most trusted sources of knowledge on the area. He generously shared his insights with anyone who sought his guidance and enthusiasm for researching and understanding our history.

The couple made Goliad their permanent home ten years ago, quickly becoming part of the community through volunteering, local events, and the library lecture series. Ernest was deeply proud of his research, his volunteer service, and the history he helped keep alive. He was equally proud of his wife, his daughter Mandy, and the friendships he made along the way.

Ernest is survived by his devoted wife, Virginia; his daughter Amanda Nasto; his sons Kenneth Burton and Travis Burton; and his sister Theresa Nelson and her husband Phillip. He is also cherished by his grandchildren, Levi Nasto and Colton Burton; numerous nieces and nephews; and many dear friends and colleagues from Texas Parks and Wildlife–Goliad State Park.

He is preceded in death by his parents, Helen and Chester Barnes; his sister, Joan Ross; and his brother, Chester Barnes Jr.

Family and friends will gather for a visitation on Tuesday, March 17, 2026, from 9:00 AM to 10:00 AM, with a Funeral Mass at 10:00 AM at Immaculate Conception Catholic Church in Goliad, Texas, with interment to follow at Flores Cemetery in La Bahía.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the J.A. White Family Goliad Center for Texas History at the Goliad Public Library.
