Ernest Gene Burns, known lovingly to his family and friends as "Nunu," passed away peacefully on January 18, 2025, in Cisco, Texas. He was born on June 15, 1938, in Gorman, Texas, to William Marshall and Myrtle (Weaver) Burns. Gene grew up in Comanche County, a place that fostered his hardworking spirit and deep family values.
On June 17, 1959, Gene married the love of his life, Patricia "Pat" Lorea Fisher, in Gustine, Texas. Together, they built a loving family that became the foundation of his joy and fulfillment. Gene leaves behind his devoted wife Patricia, his daughter Lyn Annette Mercer, and grandchildren Misty Gail Lego and husband, Charlie and Robert Gene Mercer and wife, Rasha; great-grandchildren, Harper Grace, Hadley Gail and Barrett Seth Mercer who cherished every moment spent with their beloved Nunu. He is also survived by his sister-in-law, Maxine Burns and great grand-dogs, Carson and Hershey and numerous nieces and nephews.
Gene's professional life was devoted to serving as a courier for First Financial Bank, where he worked diligently. Outside of work, he found immense pleasure in tending to his yard, embracing the call of the outdoors with a passion for hunting, and unwinding while watching his favorite sports teams: the Texas Rangers, Dallas Cowboys, and Texas Longhorns. He had a special fondness for Westerns on television.
A committed member of the First Christian Church of Eastland, Gene's faith was a cornerstone of his life, guiding him through both joyous and challenging times. As a family man, he will be remembered for the love he had for his grandchildren, delighting in reading to them and sharing stories that will forever echo in their hearts.
Services are under the care of Edwards Funeral Home, the celebration of life for Ernest Gene Burns will be held on Saturday, January 25, 2025 at 2:00PM at First Christian Church in Eastland, officiated by Bro. Jim Wright and Bro. David Hullum. In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that donations be made to the First Christian Church, 215 S. Lamar St., Eastland, TX 76448.
As we reflect on the cherished memories and indelible impact of Gene's life, we hold dear the love and laughter he brought into our lives. Rest in peace, dear NuNu; you will forever remain in our hearts.
Gene was preceded in death by his parents, William Burns and Myrtle Burns Milam; son-in-law, Ronald Mercer and two brothers, Bill Burns and Jesse Burns and great grand-dogs, Jack and Ruger.
