Lake Hopatcong, New Jersey – Ernest Carlton Johnson, 84, died on January 13, 2026, at Morristown Medical Center following complications from a fall in November.

Born in Montclair, New Jersey, on October 26, 1941, Ernie grew up in North Caldwell. He proudly served for more than five years in the Army and the National Guard before beginning a career with New Jersey Bell Telephone (now Verizon). He started as a lineman, worked his way up in the company, and made lifelong friends in the process.

For more than 50 years, Ernie enjoyed his home in Lake Hopatcong. He took great pride in caring for his property and was often seen mowing the grass, raking the yard, planting flowers, trimming shrubs, and feeding the birds.

A quiet and gentle man, Ernie fostered many long-lasting relationships with cousins, coworkers, neighbors, and friends made through his two favorite hobbies: collecting antique telephones and the Model A Car Club. He enjoyed enjoyed fishing, boating, traveling, and getting together any time for a meal at one of his favorite restaurants or diners.

Ernie's kindness and generosity extended to family and friends alike. He gladly chauffeured people to medical appointments, ran errands, cared for a neighbor's cat, and helped with grocery shopping. In addition, he supported almost 200 charities and foundations.

Ernie was predeceased by his parents, Carlton and Ruth Johnson, and his sister, Nancy Pearsall. He is survived by his niece, Junellen Neece, and beloved cousins: James Goodman, Joyce McCaffery, William Speenburg, Janet Squier, and many special second cousins including Laura Huda, Kathy Joyce, Thomas McCaffery, and Barry Squier.
