Ernest Lucarelli, 87, formerly of Orange, CT, passed away peacefully on April 12 at Greenwich Hospital. Born on June 21, 1937, in Brooklyn, NY, Ernie grew up in a large Italian family that shaped his lifelong love of food and family.
As a young man, Ernie began what would become a lifelong career at Equitable Life Assurance. He started in the sorting room and, through hard work and determination, rose to the position of Chief Underwriter over more than 40 years. Known for his dedication, integrity, and steady leadership, he left a lasting impression on colleagues. It was also at Equitable where he met his beloved wife of 57 years, Victoria.
Ernie was most at home in the kitchen. His Italian cooking brought people together-whether it was his family sauce passed down from his mother, his potatoes and eggs, or his signature lasagna, every dish was an expression of care.
He also enjoyed working with his hands-tinkering with cars, building furniture, and tending to his vegetable garden, where he waged an annual battle with squirrels for his tomatoes.
As a child, Ernie spent many joyful summers at the family compound in Mahopac, NY, where he created countless cherished memories with cousins and extended family. It remained his happy place throughout his life-a source of connection and lasting joy.
He was a kind and generous man, always going above and beyond for family and friends. He made everyone feel special when they were with him.
A dedicated volunteer, he served on the Town of Orange Tree Committee and the Capital Planning Committee, helped seniors with their taxes, led a Cub Scout pack, and coached youth baseball. Win or lose, he always treated the team to ice cream. He also never passed up a game of catch, a pickup football match, or shooting hoops.
He loved being a grandfather and delighted in making pancakes or French toast during visits, playing on the floor with cars and trains, building sandcastles at the beach, or flying kites. He took great pride in the happiness and accomplishments of his grandsons.
Ernest is survived by his wife, Victoria; his son, John Lucarelli (Cheryl Makrinos) of Greenwich; his daughter, Jennifer Lucarelli Shimer (Cory Shimer) of Shrewsbury, MA; and his grandsons, Thomas and Derek Shimer. He is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was predeceased by his parents, Frank and Clara Lucarelli; his sister, Rosemarie; and his brother, Michael.
A funeral Mass will be held at St. Michael the Archangel Parish on 469 North Street in Greenwich on Tuesday, April 15, at 10 a.m. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Beth-El Center in Milford, CT, in Ernest's memory.
