Ernest G. "Sam" Maag, age 72, of
Perry, Michigan, passed away peacefully on Friday, December 19, 2025, at the University of Michigan Health–Sparrow Campus.
A memorial gathering will be held on Tuesday, December 23, 2025, from 1:00–3:00 PM and 5:00–7:00 PM at Watkins Brothers Funeral Homes, 214 S. Main Street,
Perry, MI 48872.
Sam was born on April 2, 1953, in
Durand, Michigan, to the late Harold and Gertrude Maag. He grew up in a large household with nine siblings and often shared stories of the trouble he got into as one of the youngest-especially alongside his nephew John-while growing up on the farm.
Sam's early years laid the foundation for a life defined by family, hard work, and an appreciation for nature. He carried these values into adulthood when he married Joan Copeland, on July 7, 1973, at Morrice United Methodist Church. Together they shared 52 years of marriage and raised four children: Jason, Josh, Joe, and Julie.
Family was at the center of Sam's life. Time spent back to the lake and watching his children play sports during their younger years brought him happiness. A proud graduate of Morrice High School, Class of 1972, Sam was well known for his dedication and strong work ethic.
Sam spent over 44 years working at Sparrow Hospital in the engineering department as an HVAC technician, where he built lasting friendships and many memories.
An avid hunter and fisherman, Sam loved deer camp, fishing trips, and talking about all things turkey hunting. He especially enjoyed time at his property in Vestaburg, or at home he could often be found making jerky, salmon dip, and pickled everything to share with those close to him. Sam also enjoyed the annual anniversary trip to St. Ignace with Joan and was guaranteed to tell you, "you got it made," if you spent enough time with him.
Sam took great pride in watching his family grow, welcoming grandchildren and his first great-grandchild. He never missed an opportunity to support them-whether attending countless sporting events, dance recitals, graduations, choir concerts, weddings, or simply spending time together sharing stories. He was a constant presence in their lives and created countless memories.
Sam is lovingly remembered by his wife of 52 years, Joan; his children, Jason (Erin) Maag, Josh (Korey) Maag, Joseph (Nicole) Maag, and Julie (Chris) Striebel; his 11 grandchildren and one great-grandchild; his sisters, Marion Goda and Jean (Paul) Schlicklin; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Gertrude Maag, and seven of his siblings.
Ernest "Sam" Maag lived his life with simplicity, humor, and love. His legacy is one of devotion to his family and quiet generosity. In lieu of flowers or gifts, memorial contributions in Sam's name may be made to Hunters Feeding Michigan™.
