Ernest Owusu-Poku, age 40, of Squirrel Hill, Pittsburgh passed unexpectedly on November 1, 2025. Ernest was a PhD student at the University of Pittsburgh Department of Music pursuing a degree in Ethnomusicology. Ernest attended University of Ghana and completed a diploma, undergraduate and masters degrees in Music between 2011 and 2022. He was a prolific keyboardist and bassist who performed with notable musicians. He also played with several bands, bringing a generous spirit to every stage. Passionate about returning Ghanaian highlife recordings and material culture to Ghana, he secured funding in 2024 and established a highlife archive at the University of Ghana—an ambitious, community-centered project that shaped his PhD work and stands as a testament to his vision. While here in the US, Ernest combined his academic pursuits with devoted service as Music Director at his local Church of Pentecost. In 2024, he married the love of his life, Vanessa Oheneba Takyi, his longtime friend and confidante. When they later lived together in the United States, their relationship—rooted in mutual respect and shared dreams—blossomed into a partnership marked by deep affection and unwavering support. His sudden demise has brought profound sorrow to Vanessa, his family, friends and academic community. He will be remembered as a man of faith, integrity and vision. A Memorial service will be held Saturday, November 15 at 10 AM at the Bock Funeral Home, Ltd., 1500 Mt. Royal Blvd., Glenshaw, PA. A Celebration of Life will follow at The Church of Pentecost, Conway, PA at 4:00 PM. Contributions may be made towards the funeral costs and Vanessa’s support at https://gofund.me/38333c383
