Ersie Jane Houser Lighty of Veedersburg, Indiana, and most recently a resident of The Waters of Covington, passed away on August 14, 2024, at approximately 4:15 am.
Ersie Jane was born at home in Tompkinsville, Kentucky on August 31, 1931, the daughter of Elmer Lee Capps and Clonia Phene Spear Capps.
Ersie married James Martyn Houser on April 30, 1951, in Rockville, Indiana. James Martyn Houser passed away on March 3, 1976, at their home in Veedersburg.
Ersie later married Estel “Speck” Lighty on September 30, 1979. They were fondly known to friends and the community as “Speck and Jane.”
Ersie worked for many people in the Veedersburg community; however, for most of those years, her employment was with Mary Bussard and Carolyn Marshall, which was much more than employment - it was a sincere friendship.
Ersie’s hobbies included gardening, cooking, sewing, tending to her flowers, and spending time with family and friends, either at home or the Corner Pub in Veedersburg, where she was loved by all that knew her. Above all else, she loved spending time with her son, daughter-in-law, grandson, and two great granddaughters.
Mother to John H. (Kathy) Houser and stepmother to many with her second marriage to Estel (Speck) Lighty, Ersie is survived by her son, John H. (Kathy) Houser of Veedersburg, Indiana; all stepchildren, one grandson Adam J. (Kishia Criswell) Houser of Williamsport; two great granddaughters, Haidyn Mae Houser and Hadley Grace Houser of Williamsport. The eldest of fifteen children, surviving are four brothers, Elvin Lee (Kathy) Capps of Greencastle; Gilbert Dale (Mary Ann) Capps of Louisville, Kentucky; Edward L. (Mable) Capps of Cunot; Raymond J. (Cathy) Capps of Greencastle and one sister Judy Ann (Richard) York of Greencastle along with a very extensive list of loved nieces, nephews, great and great great nieces and nephews.
Ersie was preceded in death by her parents Elmer Lee and Clonia Phene Capps of Greencastle; husband James Martyn Houser of Veedersburg; husband Estel “Speck” Lighty of Veedersburg; siblings Billy Capps (stillborn infant); Junior Ray Capps of Greencastle, Versia L. Iserman of Watertown, Wisconsin; Johnny E. (Artava) Capps of Reelsville; Robert Wayne (Evelyn) Capps of Brazil; Venie Ree Sexton of West Terre Haute; Martha Lea (Leonard) Davis of Toone, Tennessee; Anna M. (Kenneth) Strauser of Linton and Ruth Ann Willams, Greencastle.
Visitation will be at Dickerson Funeral Home on Monday, August 19, 2024 from 12:00 p.m. until funeral service time at 2:00 p.m. Interment to follow at Rockfield Cemetery.
