Erwin Reschke Obituary

Erwin August “Win” Reschke departed on January 17, 2025, at the age of 91, following a brief illness. He was the cherished patriarch and spirited instigator of his beloved extended family.

Win was born December 6, 1933 in Chicago, Illinois. Following in the footsteps of his brother George, he ventured east to attend Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI), where he earned his degree in mechanical engineering. After graduation, Win served as a vehicle maintenance officer in the U.S. Air Force, stationed in Wyoming and later in Korea.

In 1957, Win pursued a career in business and enrolled at the University of Colorado, Boulder, where he earned his MBA. During this time, he met the love of his life, Barbara Frey, at the iconic Sink on the Hill in Boulder. They married in October 1959 and built a beautiful life together. Their family grew with the arrival of their children: Eric (Lillian), Kurt (Mary), and Jennie (Martin Pucher).

Win’s professional life was a blend of engineering ingenuity and entrepreneurial drive. Early in his career, he worked with Heron Poma, traveling the globe to design and install ski lifts. However, his independent spirit led him to branch out on his own in the 1970s, rescuing Universal Check Service and transforming it into a thriving business through innovation and early adoption of technology. He ultimately sold the company to Deluxe Check Service in the 1990s, marking the culmination of a remarkable career. He contributed his leadership to Rotary International along the way.

In 1971, Win and Barbara settled in The Knolls, where they became deeply involved in fostering a vibrant and connected community. Their home became a hub for friendship and shared purpose, leaving an enduring impact on the neighborhood’s spirit and success. He played tennis forever, until 86 years(!) - and was actually on the number two ranked doubles team in Colorado into his 80’s.

Retirement brought new adventures for Win and Barbara, as they traveled extensively to destinations including Vietnam, China, Africa, and Europe. But Win’s greatest joy came from his role as “Papa” to his grandchildren: Cole, Celia, Simone, Sierra, Sebastian, Gage,

and Sascha. He was deeply devoted to them, creating cherished memories and inspiring each one in unique and meaningful ways.

Win was known for his mischievous streak and infectious sense of humor. While Barbara often tried to rein him in, his playful impulses remained a hallmark of his personality. Beneath his lightheartedness was a serious and thoughtful man, though he never let life become too heavy. His motto seemed to be: “Don’t take life so seriously,” a sentiment he lived by with a twinkle in his eye.

Win will be remembered for his kindness, his ingenuity, his boundless energy, and, above all, his love for his family and friends. His legacy of laughter, leadership, and love will live on in the hearts of all who knew him.

Celebration of Life to be held at MorningStar at Holly Park, 6675 S. Holly St., 2-4pm on February 1, 2025.
