Esther Scott Obituary

Obituary published on Legacy.com by Hankins & Whittington Funeral Home on Jun. 12, 2022.
Esther Ackerman Scott, 77, of North Myrtle Beach, South Carolina, passed away peacefully on June 5, 2022. Born June 7, 1944, in Birmingham, Alabama, she grew up in Fort Mill, SC and spent the majority of her adult years in Whiteville, NC where she made lifetime friends.
Esther is survived by her Mother, Sarah Ackerman of Fort Mill, SC; Children, Rachel (and Brad) Couchenour of Charlotte, NC and Benjamin Leder of Sanford, FL; Daughter-in-law, Shannon Leder of Concord, NC; Siblings, Allan Ackerman of Columbia, SC, Penni (and Steve) Powell of Charlotte, NC, and Bernie (and Teri) Ackerman of Fort Mill, SC; along with three grandsons, Matthew and Bennett Leder of Concord, NC and George Couchenour of Charlotte, NC. She was predeceased by her father George Ackerman and Son, Samuel Leder.
Esther was a teacher at heart and loved to give back to her community as evidenced by her volunteerism and leadership in civic organizations too numerous to list. She worked in Whiteville City Schools for over 30 years as a teacher and later in her career as a guidance counselor. She enjoyed traveling the world but thoroughly loved her time at North Myrtle Beach walking on the beach and collecting seashells. In retirement she enjoyed playing tennis, bowling, and spending time with her family.
A funeral ceremony was held on Tuesday, June 7, 2022 in Charlotte, NC at Temple Israel which was followed by an immediate graveside service.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that you consider a donation to either the Columbus County DREAM Center (403 S. Martin Luther King Ave, Whiteville, NC 28472; ccdreamcenter.org) or Temple Emanu-El ( 406 65th Ave. N., Myrtle Beach, SC 29572; www.mbsynagogue.org)
Feel free to leave the family your condolences via the Tribute wall provided.

Esther was my 2nd grade teacher in 1981, and one of my favorite teachers ever. We made Christmas ornaments in class that my family and I still use to this day.

To Rachel, Benjamin and all of Esther's family. My sincere sympathy is sent your way. I am so sad that my sweet and loyal friend is not with us any longer. We will sorely miss her in so many ways and circumstances. She was a real asset to any group that she belonged to and to our community. I loved Esther and feel an empty place in my heart knowing I will not see her any longer. I wish I could have been able to attend her service but I had a long-awaited Doctor's appointment. Know that I love you two and would love to see you. Let me know when you are in Whiteville. Love and prayers, Hilda Ray
