It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Eugene Shirley Bartholomew on Monday, February 2, 2026. Born on November 16, 1943, in Sterling, Utah, Eugene was the beloved son of Jesse Shirley and Merlene Bartholomew. He was the eldest of four siblings, cherished by his brothers Bruce and Kendall, and sister Sherry Anderson.

Eugene's formative years were spent in Mayfield, Utah, where he graduated from Gunnison High School before pursuing higher education at Snow College. He later earned a bachelor's degree in Business Management and Social Work from Brigham Young University. Eugene's professional journey began as a case worker in Richfield, Utah, and he subsequently served as the director of family services for eight years in Manti, Utah. In 1975, he became the proud owner and operator of Mayfield Manor, a role he fulfilled with dedication for 19 years, feeling it was a privilege to care for his patients and their families.

Eugene was a successful entrepreneur, owning Subway franchises in Salina, Ephraim, and Gunnison, before venturing into real estate. Alongside his wife, Sheila, he enjoyed being a camp host at Ferron Reservoir, where they delighted in meeting campers from all walks of life.

On September 12, 1964, Eugene married his sweetheart, Sheila K. Childs. Their 61-year union was blessed with five children: Kim (KayC) Caldwell, Jeff (Brenda) Bartholomew, Sharee (Morgan) Jensen, Shane Bartholomew, and Ron Bartholomew. Eugene was a proud grandfather to 15 grandchildren and 20 great-grandchildren, whom he loved and adored.

A devout member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, Eugene held various church callings, including serving as bishop of the Mayfield Ward, and he and Sheila served as couple missionaries in the Anaheim, California Mission. His unwavering testimony of Jesus Christ and the Plan of Salvation guided his life.

Eugene loved living in Mayfield and raising his family so close to the mountains. He cherished time spent with family and dear friends at his cabin at Ferron Reservoir. He loved the mountains, his loyal dog Buster, and his ever-present Diet Coke. Known for his quick wit, infectious energy, and generous spirit, Eugene's legacy is the kindness and wisdom he imparted to all who knew him.

Eugene is survived by his loving wife Sheila, their children, 15 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Jesse Shirley Bartholomew, Merlene Bartholomew, and brother, Kendall Bartholomew.

The family extends heartfelt gratitude to the staff at Gunnison Hospital for their compassionate care during this difficult time.

Funeral Services will be held on Saturday, February 7, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. in the Mayfield Ward Chapel.
Viewings will be held at the church on Friday, February 6, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. and also prior to services on Saturday from 9:30 to 10:30 a.m.
