Eugene F. Canfield

Eugene F. Canfield passed away on 3/5/24, just two days after his 80th birthday. "Gene" was beloved son of Willard L. (deceased) and Julia M. (Houseworth) Canfield (deceased). He is survived by brother, Gerald L. (Rosalie) Canfield; sister, Marilyn H. (Bill Anthes) Canfield; sister, Phyllis G. Canfield; nieces, Margo (Tim) Kent, and Megan (Kosta) Giannoutsos; nephews, Joe (Melissa) Canfield, Chris (Michelle) Canfield, and Don (Ember) Crooks; and many great nephews and nieces.
Gene was very active in his church, York United Methodist (UMC), where he had attended services since he was a child. He served on the Missions Committee for many years. In addition, he served on the Board of the York Township Historical Society, which is located across the road from York UMC.
Gene was a dedicated volunteer at Medina Community Center, where he made many friends and helped many others. Gene was also a volunteer with Habitat for Humanity, and was in Ghana, West Africa, for several years, helping build homes for residents. Many interesting stories started with "When I was in Ghana..."
After he moved into Brookdale Assisted Living, he became known as "the hat guy', because he enjoyed wearing a variety of them, such as his Captain's hat, Canfield Fair hat, York UMC hat, and especially his Vietnam Era veteran's hat. He was a proud veteran of the U.S. Army and had served in Vietnam during the war.
The family wishes to express their sincere appreciation to the staff and residents of Brookdale Camelot Medina, for their care, concern, and love, as well as Summa Care Hospice, who treated Gene with loving care.
Gene's life will be celebrated on Saturday, April 6, 2024, at York United Methodist Church, 6566 Norwalk Road, Medina, Ohio. The family will have visitation at the church at 10:00 AM, with the service following at 11:00 A.M. A Private Family Inurnment will take place at a later date at Ohio Western Reserve National Cemetery in Seville, Ohio.
