Eugene Francis Gorman, 90, of McKeesport, passed away peacefully at Whitetail Springs Assisted Living on Sunday, May 19, 2024. Born August 6, 1933, in Pittsburgh, PA, to Frank and Elizabeth Gorman. Gene grew up in Greenfield. He was the fourth brother of siblings: Jay, Connie, Paul, and Bill (all deceased), survived by Bud, Butch, and Marzie.
Gene passionately played sandlot football and softball daily at Magee Field. A Central Catholic graduate, he proceeded to Potomac State College to play football. In one game against Glenville, he had three interceptions, including a 97-yard touchdown return. This earned him a spot on the University of Pennsylvania's football team. It was on that field, he was drafted by the US Army. He proudly served his country for two years in Munich, Germany. He studied at Penn State University, ultimately graduating from the University of Pittsburgh with a degree in education and a master's degree from Duquesne University. Returning home from Germany, he met the love of his life, the late Mary Kay O'Toole and was married to her for 63 years.
He became the first head football coach and Biology teacher at Serra Catholic High School. His influence on his students and players lasted a lifetime. His Crooner's voice performed "Moon River" and "I Left My Heart in San Francisco" at Serra proms and later at students' weddings. Central Catholic, South Allegheny, and St. Joe's also topped his resume.
Gene was also a champion swimmer. His lifeguarding at Schenley Park Pool provided his family with the quintessential summer camp. It included cookouts and sing-alongs with some of Oakland and Lawrenceville's finest. He took his last lifeguard test at the age of 80 and received a standing ovation when he passed it.
A die-hard fan of the Steelers, Pirates, Notre Dame, and Yankees, he loved the game. He treasured traveling, walking the track, and cheering at local sporting events with his wife. Most of all, Gene was a proud father, grandfather, and great-grandfather who always put his family first. His wife described him as "the most reliable, faithful, inspirational, no maintenance man on the face of the earth." His students applauded "his prioritized balance of life: God, family, school, sports, and then everything else..." "I competed well; I finished the race, and I kept the faith."
He is survived by his three children, Mary of Steamboat Springs, CO; Sally Leonatti (Don); and Tim of McKeesport; three grandchildren, Jennifer Summers (AJ) and Jessica Leonatti; and three great-grandchildren, Ethan, Jack and Edie Summers. No visitation is scheduled. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Thursday, May 30, 2024, at 10 a.m. at St. Rosalia Church in Greenfield, with Rev. Douglas Boyd officiating. Inurnment will follow at Calvary Cemetery. Condolences and memories may be shared at www.jaycox-jaworskifh.com.

Strange.... When i was in pittsburgh , for a few years , I swam at the veteran hospital pool. And there the lifeguard was Gene. A great guy , very welcoming , always interested in others , caring. We stayed in touch when I came back in Belgium. After a few year of Xmas cards exchanges, we lost contact. I don `t know why , this morning , I was thinking of him. So , don´t ask me why , i googled his name..... to realise that he passed a few days ago and that his burial service is TODAY .... Crazy....
RIP Gene. You were a really great guy. Thank you for everything

I am going to miss you, Mr.Gorman! I haven't had a chance to talk to you in 4 years, but I still have all the letters you sent me in reply to the hordes I used to send you. I'm sorry we never did get to have that pizza. Next time I have one, I will think of you. Thanks for everything Mr.G!

To my Gorman Family - You have our deepest sympathy on the loss of your Dad and Grandfather - Uncle Gene was top notch and his smile and conversation always lit up the room. We were all blessed to have him in our lives and will miss him a great deal. I am sure he was welcomed with open arms by Aunt Mary Kay and his beloved brothers and sister who passed before him.

My thoughts and prayers go out to the Gorman family. Coach Gorman was my football coach in high school. He was a man who commanded and received respect from the young men who he coached. I have had the opportunity to have a career in college football and know the effect that a high school coach can have on the lives of young men.I know first hand that he taught me to be strong ,fight in the face of adversity, and never give up! You never forget your first coach! A few years back ,before one of my games, I left a voicemail on his phone thanking him for what he taught me. My thoughts and prayers are with you. Bob LaCivita

Mr. Gorman where to start. You truly will be missed by many. I will always remember you being that teacher who said to me in Science class don't go into labor here but I did and you got my son his first outfit.. his baby picture hung up on your chalkboard even a few years later it was still there. You cared and it showed. Rest easy.

Dear Mary, Sally, Don, and Tim,
Please accept my deepest sympathy and prayers of consolation on your dear Dad´s passing. I last saw your Mom and Dad at my Dad´s wake in March 2016 and they were as vibrant and uplifting as ever. May he join your mom and my parents in the great banquet feast of heaven, where endless joy evaporates all tears. May the risen Lord Jesus walk with you in these difficult days. May faith in the resurrection turn your mourning into dancing as your parents would love. Peace, grace, and prayers. Joe
