Eugene F. (Gene) Horning ~ September 6, 1950 - June 17, 2025
STOW - It is with great sorrow and quiet joy that we announce the passing of our husband, father, and grandfather, Gene Horning, on the morning of June 17, 2025.
Gene was born September 6, 1950, the youngest child of Walter and Helen Horning, in Canton, Ohio, to a home with his brothers, Thom, Jim, and Dan. He was a quiet, left-handed student who never had to study much, but liked to say he had a "photogenic memory.” Gene was an altar boy who loved Latin and studied it all four years at Canton Central Catholic High School.
After high school, he attended Kent State University to study music and music education. While finishing college, he earned money by working and managing at Waltz Camera in downtown Canton. This led to many different jobs in manufacturing management. Gene's great skill at problem solving and teaching became his gift to all. His quiet comedic comebacks brought us joy.
Our family, wife, Kate Leahy Horning; children, Jocelyn (Toby) Ayer, Jess Horning, Jillian (Andy) Marshall, and Johanna (Leland) Flanders, all rejoice that he is now free of pain and is eating tasty food in heaven. His brothers, Thom (Betty Anne) Horning, Jim (Linda) Horning, and Dan (Kathy) Horning, will continue on in remembering his strength and love. His grandchildren, Kylie and Drew Marshall, Oliver and Anna Ayer, and Liam and Ella Flanders, will miss his dry wit and help with any wood project. Our family trip to Niagara Falls will always remain one of our favorite memories together.
Family and friends are invited to attend a Memorial Mass on Saturday, July 5, 2025, at 11 AM, at The University Parish Newman Center, 1424 Horning Road, in Kent, 44240, where friends may call from 10 AM, until the time of Mass. Father William Wainio celebrant. A luncheon will immediately follow. Please wear light summer clothes as this is a celebration of Gene's life. Interment of cremains will be held at another date.
Arrangements entrusted to Redmon Funeral Home in Stow.
One of Gene's last passions was the difficulties in our government. Anything one can do through prayer or protest, he would appreciate.
