Eugene Limpy Sr. – Mo'e'ha Ma'etahtse (Red Magpie) was born on May 18th, 1949 to Agnes Littlewhiteman and Henry Limpy.
He grew up in Ree District/Rosebud Creek on the Northern Cheyenne Reservation with his siblings; Homer, Clifford, Henry Jr. "Jimmy", Raymond, Lillian, Letha, Sarah, Edith, Mary Jane, Doris, and Wahlena.
At St. Labre Indian Catholic School in Ashland, he started his educational journey alongside his parents who both worked as Dorm Attendants for the school. He excelled in both academics and in the game of basketball, firmly believing in the term student-athlete. Eugene showcased incredible work ethic and talent which helped lead the team to become the Class C State Champions in 1967. Eventually, the team would be inducted into the Montana Indian Hall of Fall for this feat. His senior year, he transferred to the Northern Cheyenne Tribal School in Busby where he graduated as Valedictorian.
Continuing with his education, he received scholarships to attend San Jose College in California and Rocky Mountain College in Montana. Basketball played a significant role in his life and gave him the opportunity to travel all over the world. He met many friends and some who even became his brothers; Dwight Stewart, Myron Fallsdown, and Marshall Lefthand. He would eventually graduate from MSU-Billings with his Bachelors in Native American Studies.
His first job was as a BIA Wildland Firefighter where he continued to work on and off over the span of 20 years, working his way up to a Crew Rep. He also worked at Thunder Child in Sheridan, WY. He held two terms as a Tribal Council Member for Busby District. One in which he met the President of The United States – Bill Clinton – he had a great story for that. He was also a Director for Project Morning Star and TERO. He spent numerous years in each position.
Throughout his life, he often spoke of helping his people. He was a man of prayer and the Cheyenne way of living. He attended and ran Peyote Meetings/Native American Church Meetings across the states. He would happily make his annual trip to the Peyote Gardens in Texas until he could no longer make them. His Peyote Family included Hugh Clubfoot, Vance Littlebird, Tweety Littlebird, George Elkshoulder Jr., Van Ryan Sr., Eugene Russell, Herman Bearcomesout, Jude Brady, Roger Redhat, Al Piper, and Sterling Wallace. Special nephew TJ (Lori) PlentyChief and TJ PlentyChief Jr.
Eugene was a humble man who always visited you with a smile on his face. He easily shared a good joke, some wise words, or a crazy story. You could count on him for that 5am wake up call and visit. His morning prayers and phone call visits will be greatly missed.
He is survived by his sisters MaryJane, Rosie (Jude), Children Wayland (Regina), Travis (Jade), Trevor (Jasmine), Tasheena, Tisha (Leighton) Sioux, Sven (Patricia), Gina (David) Millegan, Quentin (Valerie) Whiteman, Preston (Velma) Whiteman.
