Eugene Frank “Gene” Matthews passed away on January 15, 2026, leaving behind a large family legacy that will be cherished by those who knew him. He was 92.
Gene was born in Mackay, Australia in 1933. He moved to the United States with his mother and father in 1948. He became a naturalized citizen and soon joined the United States Airforce where he served proudly in Korea and other places in Southeast Asia. Gene proudly served in the United States Air Force, demonstrating a commitment to his country that reflected his strong values and dedication. As Staff Sergeant, Gene was awarded various medals including the Southeast Asia Campaign War Medal and the Korean War Medal.
Gene was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years Millie Matthews, his mother Marian Wood, father Chester Matthews, and his brother Lawrence Charles Kopp. Gene is survived by his children Ferrell Yeokum (Debbie), LuWana Clary, Eugene Matthews (Rosemary), Colleen Worth (Lawrence), Maureen Parsonage (Dave), and Matt Matthews (Stephanie). Gene is also survived by his 17 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren and 5 great-great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00pm, Wednesday, January 28, 2026, at Bill DeBerry Funeral Directors in Denton, Texas. Gene will be laid to rest at Dallas/Fort Worth National Cemetery in Dallas, Texas at 11am on January 29, 2026.
