Eugene "Cookie Monster" Nick

Eugene Nick, age 96, of Western Springs, passed away peacefully on October 15th. Beloved husband of Dolores (nee Stroga); Loving father of Nancy (Jeff) Epsaro, David (Margaret), Susan (John) and Mark. Fond uncle of Cary (Jean), Mary, and Bob (Liz). Cherished son of the late Frank & the late Marie Nick; also pre-deceased by his beloved brother Francis (Bette) Nick. A friend to many near and far.

After completing a post-war stint with the Army in Germany, he married Dolores Stroga on May 31, 1958 and they raised their children in Western Springs.

Gene attended Lane Tech and Wilbur Wright Junior College in Chicago, graduated from the University of Illinois with an accounting degree and made a long career as a Vice President for the Federal Home Loan Bank in Chicago.

Gene loved reading and shared many books with his family and friends. Sudoku and crossword puzzles were also treasured pastimes. He loved the water and spending time at his parents' family cottage in Fox Lake with his extended family. In his earlier years he crewed on various Chicago rowing teams and later enjoyed sailing, swimming and kayaking on Lake Michigan along with time at their Indiana lake house with family and friends.

He had a wonderful sense of humor, and his family affectionately called him the "Cookie Monster".

Memorial Mass will take place on October 29th at 11am at St. John of the Cross Church, 5005 Wolf Rd., Western Springs. Interment of the ashes will be later in St. Casimir Cemetery, Chicago. Additional Information: 708-352-6500.
