Eugene Smith Obituary

Obituary of Eugene Smith
1932-2023
I was born in Chino, California as the third son to Dixie Smith (Mayhew) and Charlton Smith. The first son Gilmore, died at birth. I am preceded in death by my sister Donnale and brother Ronald. I am survived by my children, Linda, Shannon, Perry and Misty. As well as their spouses, David and Tara. The children's mother passed away in 1994. The Children and I are grateful to have had this unfortunate void filled by Hope, a family friend, and our adopted daughter, Alicia. Also surviving are five grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren.
Growing up during the depression years of 1930s and WWII was not easy. But I credit the experiences forced on us during these difficult times as positive contributors to the many successful and valuable experiences I have had in my adult life. Growing up we all worked in the various harvests. We learned to earn our way and contributed to daily living expenses. We helped our mother carve out a home in the Noti, Oregon Area. (The cabin we built is still standing and in good shape, thanks to Linda and David's remarkable stewardship.)
All three of us kids went to Oregon College of Education, in Monmouth and became teachers, thanks to bean picking and summer sawmill work! I like to point out that our teaching careers were successful.
After a tour in the U.S. Army my first year of teaching was at the Noti Grade School. Eventually this led into administration responsibilities (principalships and an interim superintendency). However, working directly with students has been my preference!
I feel blessed to know that my family and our many nieces and nephews are leading successful lives. I am especially pleased that my wife, Hope, has put forth efforts for all our grandchildren to have the opportunity to attend college after graduating from high school!
Throughout my life I have always enjoyed working at whatever the jobs entailed. I also enjoy being a spectator at various sports events. Two highlights of my recreation activities were caving and whistling at the Louisburg North Carolina International Whistling Convention.
I passed away early Tuesday, December 5 in the comfort of my own home. I was 91 years old.
