Steuernol & McLaren Funeral Homes - West BranchEugene Irving West, passed away on Monday, February 23, 2026, at the age of 78, at McLaren Bay Region in Bay City, Michigan. He was born on October 12, 1947, in Garden City, Michigan, to James and Zella (Mikula) West. He lived in West Branch since 2015, formerly of Troy, MI.
Gene graduated from Redford High School and soon after honored his country as a proud Army veteran, serving overseas during the Vietnam War. His commitment to service extended beyond the battlefield, as he dedicated an impressive 33 years to his career at Ford Motor Company in Dearborn, where he made a lasting impact in the Dynamometer department.
He married Eleanor Maldonado in Key West, FL on April 20, 1994. They lived in Troy, MI from 1983 to 2015, when he retired and moved to West Branch.
Gene was much more than his accomplishments; he was a man of passion and zest. He cherished the moments spent in nature, and whether he was on a hunting excursion or casting lines in serene waters, he found joy in the great outdoors. His heart found adventure in travels, often exploring the country with his family in their 5th Wheel, creating beautiful memories that will forever be cherished.
In his younger years, Gene embraced the thrill of the open road as a hotrodder, reliving those exhilarating days during the annual Woodward Dream Cruise, where he connected with fellow car enthusiasts, sharing in the joy of their shared passion.
Throughout his life he was always willing to help and give a helping hand to his family and friends.
Gene’s greatest pride and joy came from his family. He leaves behind his devoted wife, Eleanor West, who was a constant source of love and support in his life. He is survived by his son, Jason (Bonnie) West, and his daughters, Wendy (Pat) Huntley and Dawn Henry. Eugene's legacy continues to thrive through his grandchildren—Brooke, Carly, Alisala, Emmalynne, and Gavin Eugene.
Gene also shared a special bond with his sister, Maxine Alger, and cherished many nieces and nephews.
He is preceded in death by his parents and his brother, Gary West.
His legacy will forever be embedded within the hearts of his family and friends, reminding us of the joy of togetherness whose memories will continue to live on in the hearts of all who were lucky enough to know him.
Gene will be laid to rest with military honors at Great Lakes National Cemetery in Holly, MI on Monday, April 20, 2026 at 2:00 p.m.
