Eva (Stubbins) Hearn, 92, was called to her heavenly home on Sunday, December 28, 2025. A proud native of New Albany, Indiana, she was born at home on Thursday, May 11, 1933, to the late Adolph and Lora (Mophens) Stubbins. Eva attended the historic Division Street Elementary School and was a member of the last graduating class of Scribner High School (the African American high school in New Albany, Indiana) in 1951. After graduation, she began working as an elevator operator for the New Albany White House Department Store. Ultimately, she retired from the Wellcor Incorporated in New Albany, Indiana. On January 31, 1959, she was united in holy matrimony to the late William B. "Spike" Hearn. Eva was a member of Howard Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, where she was baptized and accepted Christ as her Lord and Savior.
Eva was a dedicated child, sister, niece, wife, aunt, mother, grandmother, and friend. She truly loved everyone. Warmly known as "Ma" by her grandchildren, she always took the time to visit with aging family members, checking in on them, and seeing how she could help. You would rarely see her around town without her devoted husband by her side, unless she was at work or going to bingo. A supportive mother, she attended her children's sporting events and spent quality time playing in the yard with them as they grew up. She cherished her time with her grandchildren, viewing these moments as blessings from God. Eva made the holidays special for her family and enjoyed playing cards with her family and friends. She had a gift for giving her time and financial support whenever she could. Eva was an avid sports fan, enjoying basketball and football, especially following NAHS, IU, WKU, Ball State and the UK/UofL rivalry. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her. May your cherished memories bring you peace and comfort.
Eva was preceded in death by her husband, William B. Hearn; her infant twin sons, William Jr., and Wilbur; father, Adolph Milton Stubbins; mother, Lora Mae Stubbins; three infant brothers, Everett, James and Harvey; her sisters, Mary Stubbins, Addison Duncan, and Audrey Thomas; and her brothers, Edward, Milton, Robert, Charles, Norman, Walter, Thornton, and Delmar Stubbins.
She is survived by her son, Charles Michael Sparks; her daughter, Victoria (Daniel, preceded in death) Haley; her son, William "Bill" Hearn III (Beverly); her son, Robert "Bob" Hearn (Melissa); her grandchildren, Nicholas Daniel Haley, William "Quartus" Hearn IV, Sasha Hearn, Elijah Hearn, and Jasmine Hearn; her sisters, Dorothy Gibson, Cleada Lively, and Estella Stubbins; her brothers, Julius (Chalonda) Stubbins and Gary Stubbins; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and many dear friends. The family extends special thanks to their dear friend Margaret Terrell, who was Eva's caregiver after her hospitalization for pneumonia.
Visitation will take place on Thursday, January 8, from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. at Howard Chapel Missionary Baptist Church, 1715 E Market St, New Albany, IN 47150, with a service to follow at 12:00 p.m.
