Evelyn "Hinda" Mintzer

Evelyn (Hinda) Mintzer, of Des Moines, Iowa, passed away on December 15, 2025, surrounded by her four children. Evelyn was born on June 20, 1935, in Davenport, to Joseph and Blanche Sirota. While attending the University of Iowa, she met the love of her life, Dr. Albert Mintzer, and they married in 1957.

Evelyn devoted herself to her family, friends, and her multiple talents. Evelyn was an accomplished Bridge player, mentor and teacher, eventually becoming a Diamond Life Master and winning several national tournaments. Evelyn transcribed numerous books, articles and mathematical texts into Braille, earning national recognition. Evelyn was a certified master gardener, who enjoyed designing and nurturing gardens. Evelyn was a skilled knitter and earned blue ribbons at the Iowa State Fair. Always curious and capable, she was one of the first of her friends and family to use a personal computer, became a skillful investor, played clarinet and piano, and figured out of how to do everything from upholstery to car and window repair. Evelyn volunteered for many causes, including as President of Tifereth Israel Synagogue during a time when it was rare for women to be elected into leadership positions.

In 2019, Evelyn's life significantly changed following a devastating stroke. Following months of hospitalization and rehabilitation, she returned home, where her devoted nurses cared for her, maintaining her strength, spirit, and quality of life, while building meaningful friendships with her and her family. During this time, Evelyn derived great joy from her husband, children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Evelyn was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, and her sisters Belle Bestor and Tauna Abel. She is survived by her children Miriam Mintzer and her children Benjamin (Maggie Rempe) and Daniel (Hannah Herzog) Singer; Michael Mintzer (Alla Zaprudsky) and their children Gabriel, Clara, and Maizy; Dana Mintzer Leman and her children Talia (Kristyn Durst) and Zander; and Joel Mintzer (Heidi Schneider) and their children Asher (Samantha Freeman) and Isaac (Lauren); as well as by her four great-grandchildren, Calvin, Lyle, Albert, and Martin. Evelyn's entire family extend their deepest gratitude to her many caregivers.

The funeral will be held on Wednesday, December 17, at 2:00 p.m., at Tifereth Israel Synagogue, and on Zoom, followed by a meal of consolation at the same location at 4:00 p.m. Donations in her honor can be sent to the Des Moines Botanical Center, Tifereth Israel Synagogue, or the Des Moines Jewish Federation.
